a film scanner... thoughts?

I haven't had any personal experience with Pacific Image scanners but EVERYTHING I have heard has been negative. I recommend spending some time poking around for reviews here, on photo.net and just generally on the web.
 
I haven't heard much about the company, but batch scanning an uncut roll would be awesome. i have goneback to letting Walgreens put my negs on a CD. Just for time's sake.
 
I tested one of those a long time ago and found it to be very soft in focus.. to the point that I spent some time on tech support with the company, e-mailed them some tests and they confirmed that those were what the results should look like... which as I said were very soft compared to the original slide. We sent the scanner back and that was that!
 
The Nikon coolscan 5000 does full rolls with the roll film adapter. I justgot one. It works awesomely!(is that a word?)

Just my very unscientific opinion, but consumer (affordable) dedicated film scanners may have joined the dinosauers & 8-track tape players up in Relic Heaven. Neither B&H nor Adorama have the Nikon V ED and 5000 in stock. Haven't had them for awhile. A local (Houston) scanning service owner said the CoolScan 5000 has been impossible to find for awhile. With the K-M machines gone and the Nikon CoolScans virtually gone, the future for film scanners doesn't look good. I reckon Nikon figures the market is satisfied so why make any more? How long did film scanners last, anyway? Were they around 10 years ago? Product lifespan is shrinking at an alarming rate.
 
Yes, the Nikon coolscan 5000 is tough to find.
There are a few out there if you look hard enough.
We bought the SA 30 roll film adapter off ebay and all is fine.
 
I have a Scan Daul IV and I really like it. Everything in my Gallery was transferred using it. If you shot only B&W, a scanner with out ICE will be OK. with 35mm filn, I cna do very nice 11x17s. 13x19 is bit iffy, dependeing on the negative and subject matter.

If I had it to do over I would probably lean towards one of the new Epson 700 or 750s. Seems they scan pretty well, have ICE for non-silver based films and can do medium format, all very nice. Plus, I think you can use them to make custom profiles from your prints.
