This is just a suggestion, but hear me out because it may be a solution to our server problems.
This site has grown quite a bit since it was first started, and even in the time I've been here it's grown to be almost twice the size it was. This is a good thing, but it can also be a bad thing. The more people there are looking at threads in a given day, the more strain we put on the server. With the gallery on the same server as the rest of the site, it taxes the server even more. The gallery slows down the forum and the forum slows down the gallery.
I suggest we move the gallery to a completely different server.
We most likely wouldn't be able to have the Random Gallery Images on the homepage anymore (though I may be wrong...haven't worked with this forum software for a while), but it would put less of a tax on the server and allow the forum to be faster. We could even discuss gallery software options and what would work best for us.
I'd be willing to pay at least in part for this. I'd also be willing to help set it up and maintain it since I'm only working part time and, being pregnant, I don't plan on taking on a full time job until next year. It would give me something to do when I'm not working.
So...discuss. Good idea? Bad idea? Pros? Cons?
