I just realized that I've just jumped right in and haven't bothered introducing myself so that you all get an idea of who I am. Silly me. Bad.

My name is Stephanie Brim. I'm 21 years old for about another month. I'm a hopefully budding and growing photographer whose body resides in Iowa and whose heart resides somewhere east of the Mississippi toward The Big Apple. I'm soon to be a college student, a hotel front desk clerk, and a pretty avid photographer.

I got my start quite a long time ago when my sister got an old plastic 35mm camera and I decided that it would be cool to try it out. It was then that I found something out: I sucked. After that, I vowed that I would eventually become a hell of a lot better than I was. I lost interest shortly after, being a young child, and got it back again when I bought a cheap digital camera and started taking texture/object stock photos. I found that I hated the results from digital cameras and, after going through three of them, decided to move my arsenal of photographic equipment completely to film.

I have good and bad experiences with photography. Not all my photos turn out as I've planned. Due to my now completely traditionalist point of view, I try to do as little correction to my photos as possible, but I do crop to make them look the best they can. The next thing I plan to experience in full is developing my own film, a project which I'm sure will make me love film photography all the more because I love getting my hands dirty even in the figurative sense.

I'm taking my time and taking lots of photos, trying to capture those moments that may otherwise be lost. I love street photography, but also am very interested in nude and still life photography. I'm also a very avid stock photographer in most respects and I love taking photos of old, abandoned buildings and other objects with interesting stories and textures.

Due to the recent move to film, I have two cameras: a Nikon FE and a Canonet 28. Both cameras get equal use. The Nikon is fitted with the Very Nice Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI, one of the best they ever made. I aspire to, someday, owning a Leica kit as I prefer rangefinder focusing to the SLR.

I think that's about it. I'm glad to be here and I hope I learn a lot of things I didn't know. You guys have already been so helpful already that I can't thank you enough!

Welcome!

Don't feel bad -- I've never actually jumped in and introduced myself, preferring to the other forum members learn about my abrasive personality and obnoxiously pedantic writing style through personal experience!

So, have you started an RFF Gallery of your Canonet pictures yet?

Welcome, Stephanie. It is a pleasure to have you aboard. After you hang here a while you may rethink your definition of "traditionalist" though -- for many members their "new" cameras are the ones from the fifties or sixties, some of the regular users are from the thirties!!! Enjoy the forum and post often -- and don't forget the gallery. 🙂

jlw: I plan to get the first two rolls scanned ASAP and I'd just go to a friend's hosue and scan the prints, but the !@#$ing lab screwed me over on the prints and they have bright blue cast to some highlights. I don't have a negative scanner so I have to wait until I can get to Fort Dodge again or somewhere else with a one hour photo and the ability to scan to disk. Bah.

Honu-Hugger: Funny you'd mention the fact that most cameras are older. Most cameras I want to buy/use are actually at the very least older than me, and some of them are older than me by 20 years! I love old, well-built cameras so much that they're all I want to use now and I'm having a lot of trouble with deciding what to get after I get my scanner. 🙂 I'm thinking M2 or M3 with a 'cron or perhaps the Canon P. *shrug* Decisions decisions.

Sorry, Stephanie... I made those shots today, with a digital camcorder, for safety purposes, and I was itching to use them.

Welcome to the forum and don't hesitate to ask questions.

And, if you're in Iowa City, check out University Photo too! That's the place where I had a rangefinder camera in my hands for the very first time... and I must have drooled all over the place. See where these things take you? 🙂

Welcome Stephanie !!! 🙂 Thanks for the introduction. According to many things you said, I'm sure you'll love this group, let's see...

- Film cameras
- Street photography
- Your own BW developing
- Getting yourself a Leica 🙂

Yes, definitely you'll love this group, but beware that by accepting the terms and policy of this forum, you agree to suffer from some Gear Acquisition Syndrome attacks from time to time 😀 😉

Sure images like those ones from Francisco help a lot eh ? 🙂

Cheers,

Oscar

Welcome to the forums Stephanie!
I'm on the same path, and the same age 🙂
2 weeks here and you'll probably end up trying to make enough money off your cameras to pay for, well...more cameras! (Which is a good thing, isn't it!)

Have a good time here!
cheers,
Phil

Stephanie,

Welcome to the forum. I pretty much lived on Peanut Butter and Jelly throughout college to afford my Nikon SLR's and lenses.

Watch the forum 35mm ads here for good bargains. If some of the guys put up a known working Russian made camera you can get into interchangeable lens RF photography fairly cheap. The next would be a Canon 7 or Knob Wind Canon/Leica copy that are not going for all that much. The knob-wind Canon IIf was amazingly quick handling with its combined VF/RF and variable magnification finder. That camera with its F1.5 lens was much Cheaper than my new Nikon F2a cost me in Junior year!

Welcome Stephanie. Your Nikon outfit is a classic one and will serve you well. The 50/1.4 is one of my favorites. As for the Leica, well, that's a whole other worldly experience ;-) Surely we must have a member in Iowa who can loan you one? Welcome again !

Welcome, Stephanie!! I, too, am a Nikon FE owner. What a great camera body! I bought it as a backup to my N6006, but the 6006 quickly became the backup to the it!

I'd definitely consider Brian's advice about looking into a Russian body. I want a Leica, too, but it's way out of a price range. I'm going to get a FED pretty soon, though, so at least I can get my feet wet and start my lens collection.

Hi Stephanie. Welcome. 🙂 I'm sure you'll find this place to be a great resource with some very good people.

When I was about your age I made the mistake of selling the first rangefinder I had, and I've been kicking myself for doing that ever since! 🙁 Don't make that same mistake! 🙂
