Hi,

I decided to post a new thread as I have developed the test roll and I would like your opinions and advice.

Just a recap, my new FED-2 is horizontally aligned for infinity and for 2m. It is abit off in vertical alignment near and far. Below 2m, the alignment is off for horizontal.

So I developed the test roll today. This is a XP-2 Super C-41 1 hour processing. I am using a Industar-26m lens. Images are scanned at 300dpi and saved as jpd, no retouching or sharpening.

The good news is that at near distances, I think the images are good enough:
See

1. Around 1m f2.8 1/30s http://www.retro.ms11.net/fed2-d.jpg

2. At 1m f2.8 1/30s http://www.retro.ms11.net/fed2-e.jpg

3. Slightly above 1m f2.8 1/30s http://www.retro.ms11.net/fed2-g.jpg

Here it becomes interesting:

4. 5pm Green Field, f16 1/125s, Sun at on the left

http://www.retro.ms11.net/fed2-a.jpg

5. 5pm+ Scooter, f16 1/125s, Sun is setting facing me

http://www.retro.ms11.net/fed2-c.jpg

6. 5pm+ Roof, f8.5 1/125s, Sun is setting facing me on the left

Question:

a. Image 6 (the last image), is that flare coming from the upper left ?

b. What is the whitish patch in the centre of image 4,5 and 6 ? I see it in the other photos as well, only in some of the outside images not the indoor photos.

c. See http://www.retro.ms11.net/fed2-h.jpg , Sun is behind me, there is no white patch. While I am tempted to say that the patch is caused by the Sun from the side and from the front, another similar picture shows a patch as well, http://www.retro.ms11.net/fed2-i.jpg

d. I can't seem to find obvious problems with the lens, I see small scratches but no evidence of haze. (or am I looking at the wrong place ? )

e. Other possibilities, I did not change lens, so that rules out lens change. Light leaks ? Is that how it looks like?

Of course, the most obvious way to find out is to run another test roll with different lens, but I thought I'd ask you grognards first.

thanks

ps. I especially like the first picture. Very dreamy-like..no ?

Certainly the artifact in #6 is flare. As to the spot you mentioned in the others, I would say it is the same, only because it doesn't show up in the other photos that don't have the sun in the general front of the lens. Otherwise, I would have said it was some defect on the lens or something that needs to be cleaned off. If you don't have a lens hood, you might at least try to sheid the lens from the sun by using a hand or hat that blocks the sun.

#1 is very nice! The last is definitely flare. The rest could be a tiny pinhole in the lead curtain. Indoors you may not notice it much. Wind on and walk in brighter light with the cap off and there it is.

Nice images, Raytoei.

Aside from the possible flare/light leak issue, I'm afraid that you appear to have a problem with shutter fade.
Picture 4 and 5 both show a change in exposure across the frame. Look at the shadows of the trees in 4 and the detail in the wall in 5.

This is usually an issue at the fastest speed, as small changes in the gap of the curtains are much more noticeable when the gap is at its smallest, hence it is not seen clearly at those taken at slow speeds. Given that these were both taken at 125th, there is a significant mis-match in the curtain speeds. Images taken at higher speeds will really show this off. I imagine that this could be seen very clearly using the tv monitor test (see sticky on shutter tension).

There is also a dark band on the extreme right of 4, which correlates to the last portion of the travel of the curtains. Perhaps a little shutter bounce?, certainly an unwanted feature.

Sorry to mention this :(, better to recognise these problems before you invest too much time/effort on making images...

Old biker friend of mine decided to kick drugs and change his image. He sold his Harley and bought a Japanese bike. A few months later he was back on a Harley. I asked him about it. He said the Kawasaki was too well made, never broke down, and he just got bored. Half of the appeal to him was spending every weekend in the garage fixing or tweaking the Harley.

Interesting thoughts. I wonder what your friend used to get around when he had to reliably get somewhere. (Harley and spanner kit for fun, but a Volvo for work?)

I know what you mean. Even though the damned things need a little tinkering now and then, I would not like to be without all of them. I have not had any break down once it was fixed, it's just that there can be a lot of bits to fix, not all faults are that evident at first.

I must confess, these are the only cameras I buy expecting them to be faulty.

My Fed2 with a curtain like swiss cheese. Low light and recently wound-on. The "smoke" above the cigarette is actually a light leak.

From the same roll, bright light and driving around with the camera on the passenger seat and the lens cap off.

I painted the shutter curtain with liquid electrical tape. Worked fine for half a roll. I think the added thickness increases the resistance resulting in:

I won't try that again. New curtains are on the way.
