The title says it all really.
The night before last I felt like taking a walk for an hour or two around our suburb and down to a nearby dining and shopping street about 3 kilometres away. Of course I took a camera and lens - in this case a Leica SL (type 603) and a Leica Summarit 50mm f1.5. I have always liked this lens - especially its usual very low contrast rendering at wider apertures and the pastel colors that accompany this rendering.
Turns out the night-time performance was similar, much as I expected. I was also anticipating some blooming from street indoor lights and so forth and was not disappointed. All in all, I thought it rather pleasant in a very low key understated kind of way- particularly the restaurant scenes which were imbued with a kind of cosy rendering that matched the ambience of these places that I know and love. (Even though one of them was quite soft (my fault due to the difficulty of focusing in such dim light.)) Images were shot at f2 as I thought the f1.5 performance would be problematic based on what I have seen from this lens before. - even more "palely loitering" to pinch a phrase from an old poem. The high ISO performance of the SL is a bit disappointing though being somewhat below par by comparison with the Sony A7s - I had more than expected noise to clean up and the color noise was especially a surprise though it did clean up reasonably. All in all I do not think I would select the Summarit as an every day shooter but it is fun to experiment with when in the mood to try something different.
