So I should be taking possession of an m4-p any day now and I was wondering what neat accessories I could get for about $100. I've seen several types of grips, straps, and other things all over the net. I'd like advice on what the good ones are, what to avoid and why.

soft release for sure...a 'lance' strap would be my recommendation...i love round straps!
grips are nice, i like them on my cameras...if you're feeling adventurous a new 'skin' for the body, maybe something like 'cobalt' blue or snakeskin red!!

I'd get a strap of some kind, the Gordy ones are nice, but apart from that, I'd just get film. If you feel the need for all the bits and bobs like thumbs up, soft release or whatever at a later date, by all means get them, but right away, wouldn't bother.

Without cash left for film and developing, you will not benefit from any accessories.

Film, dev and paper. Lots.

I also agree with this one. I got an entire darkroom setup (lucked out on the enlarger for $20) for no more than $100 a few months ago and nothing has made me want to shoot or enjoy my cameras more. It's weird to me that some people shoot on film and don't develop at home once they feel confident with their skill exposing and shooting, which was the only reason I held back at first.

Of course to each their own. I've purchased some nice straps in my time, but the best one I have came with my Bessa R3A. I don't know if you can buy that strap separately, but it's really nice.

I actually have about 60 rolls of tri x and enough hc 110 for it (only enough fixer for 40 rolls). I think I'm fine for film and processing.
Does any one have a link to a good grip? I saw a really nice wood one that was out of my price range and I know there are the rapid winder grips that are also out of my range.
A link to a good strap to compare to the artisan and artist (which I really like) would be nice too.
I have some softies.

My first thought was, "lens hood." Which admittedly has nothing to do with the acquisition of a body, but it's the first thing I'd buy with loose "accessory money", presuming I didn't already have one for each lens. Helps reduce flare, and keeps raindrops, snowflakes, and my fingers off the front element.

Save your cash... unless you really think these accessories will help the camera ergonomically. I don't like anything but a strap personally. There's also nothing wrong with using the $100 for something other than photo stuff.

Hi John

Well, just to make the point, I'd also buy film :D

As for straps - and this may be entirely unhelpful - for my M4 I'm using the nylon strap that came with one of my old USB sticks years ago (really). It works well, is very strong and cost nothing. Plus it is easy to wrap around my wrist, much easier than a leather strap.

However, for my other cameras I use Annie Barton's (Barton 1972) "Composer" straps, $45 with worldwide shipping included. Great value for money and excellent quality. I buy them directly from Hong Kong (PayPal accepted) and delivery is very quick. They're very inexpensive compared to many other straps.

I've never used camera cases, half or otherwise, since I believe the camera body is meant to protect the camera (I'd better duck now :) )

cheers and good luck with the M4-P
