In another thread I asked Bob Rogen (aka bobkonos) about his black M3 as painted by Shintaro.

Well, he has graciously forwarded the photos and asked me to post them for RFF's collective mouth watering consumption.

Looks pretty good 🙂 Thanks Bob!

Thanks for sharing. I'm not convinced about the spackled look. The subtle shine of the current Leica black paint is sumptious. The spackle looks very stealthy though. I bet it won't even show up on radar.

I missed that other thread, so...is the chrome stripped first, and if not, does Shintaro have options for such things? The powder coating looks pretty cool, but yeah, make mine smooth shiny black with brass under it. 🙂 And it looks like (judging by the bottom plate, which looks real nice) that the engravings are white, is that correct? Oh, and how much will all that cost me? 🙂

It does look good. I prefer a smoother finish than the bumpy stuff. Its cool most people here are users and don't fret about the resale value of a repainted M3.

I bet it might go for more on epay in this black paint than a chrome M3 though. Black is pro yo!

All,

Glad to share, and BIG thanks to Tom for making it happen. I hope to provide more for you to see in the near future.

I cannot tell you how much the repaint cost because this camera came to me from a friend who got it on eBay. I was not looking to get a black M3 (heck, my MP is chrome), but this one came along and the deal was too good to pass up. I use it, enjoy it, and you oughta (hopefully will) see it with the chrome CV 28 with the rectangular hood in the same rough stuff finish as the body.

flipflop,

Please PM me: got Nikonos goodies for ya.

According to his website, he does strip the chrome first. I can't wait for mine to come back from CRR.

Shintaro charges $500 just for painting. Yes, he strips the chrome. If you have to have dings removed, thats extra.

Apparently he's been really hard to contact lately, and one user (jaapv, I believe) says his camera and his money has been with Shintaro since February and he hasn't received any communication from him at all! I'd try CRR...

I've been awaiting the return of your black M3 with more anticipation than the magenta M8. I have a feeling it will spur a new round of GAS for many of us 🙂 Can't wait.

That's the best line in that movie! There's actually a band called None More Black and I still chuckle occasionally when I listen to them.

No offender here. I love black paint M3. But if I cannot afford one, I'd prefer to get a chrome M3, instead of chrome one re-painted black. 😉 😉

BTW, I adore my black anodised M6, though I know many don't like the finish. 🙂

Pardon me for asking, but is that black spackled powder coating? If so, it will last for centuries. Dare I ask how much does it cost?

Hi All,

The finish is not black hammertone, but more like a black "spackletone." The finish is matte and thick and a bit rough in appearance, and unique to my eye.

Tom is correct: it came to me without knowledge of the cost for repainting. Oh, by the way, the white lettering on the top plate is perfect.
