Years ago, I purchased a refurbished Nikon Coolscan III (LS-30) for $450. It was a lot of money for me back then, and I used it successfully for a number of years with very satisfying results. Last year, the scanner would no longer work properly, something is mechanically wrong with it because it no longer accepted my negative strips. It rolls back and forth continuously.

I have been off the market for scanners, so I am not up-to-date on the latest and greatest. There is a guy on Ebay who occasionally offers to fix the LS-30 for a flat fee of around $90 + parts and shipping. I was tempted to take him up on it, but never got around to it.

I am interested in another dedicated film scanner (not a flatbed).

Questions:

- How much would it cost for a newer (used or new) scanner that is minimally as good as the old LS-30?
- What brands are good now?
- Should I get the old Coolscan III fixed? Or is it obsolete now?
- If I should fix it, are there any other repair shops that are reasonably priced and do good work on them?

Thanks in advance,

--Warren
