At the time (2:30 in the morning) some guys sit around a table in a lawyer's office in Cologne and talk about selling AGFA Photo to a UK investor, Photo - ME.

From the former 1800 employees 800 are fired alrady, Photo-Me has promised to keep at least 400 if they buy and to continue also film, paper and chemicals.

There is another investor in the game too, he is interested in lab equipment only, film and paper would not be continued if he wins.

I've been doing my part: Bought three 100-foot spools of APX 100. Have 60 rolls of APX 100 in 120. Still want to buy some more of each -- just in case, you know.

We've seen too many great films bite the dust since 2000.

And I'd hate to see Rodinal disappear.

Since it's one of the older devs... surely there must be a recipe to cook up something similar online ?

I'll miss it too when it's finally gone..

Just sayin,
Dave

It won't. It's being produced in it's original, pre-war, formulation as RO-9 and being sold by JB Photo. IMO, the popularity of Rodinal ensures it's continued production whether by Agfa or someone else. I have a large bottle of RO-9 just waiting for the day my Agfa Rodinal runs out.

Hey, that's almost exactly what I did... except only 25 rolls of 120.

Ahem. If I may trot out some of my useless trivia knowledge here...

I have in my dirty hands a copy of "Photographic Facts and Formulas" Revised and Enlarged by John S. Carroll, written originally by EJ Wall and FI Jordan. Copyright 1924, my copy revised and printed in 1974. It has LOTS of formulae in it, for lenses as well as for developer.

When film is done, it won't be hard to make developer, fixer, or whatever - lots of chemistry around to do that - heck, you can even use coffee, I hear. It won't even be hard to sensitize surfaces like the old dry plate guys used to do. But it will be hard to find coated stock, because that takes a manu plant to do - and they won't be building any new ones. The last to go will be Eastern European, Chinese, and former Soviet Union where they don't care so much about heavy metal poisons in the soil. But we've got a good long time left before those run down the curtain and join the choir invisible.

Rodinal:

Paraminophenol
Paraminophenol, Kodelon, C6H4(OH)(NH2) * HC1, which was introduced by Lumiere and Seyewtz in 1891, has the advantage that with a caustic alakli it can be prepared in very diluted quantities, and when diluted with appropriate amounts of water forms a very efficient developer for either negatives or papers. Stock solutions are marketed under the names Rodinal, Azol, Activol, or Certinol (NOTE: Not no more, they ain't), which are widely used on account of their convenience.
For the best keeping qualities, caustic soda instead of a carbonate must be used for the alkali. The following formula gives a stock solution very similar to the proprietary developers mentioned above...

I'd advise everyone to scout up a copy of this book - lots of them around and it is chock full of good info.

Best Regards,

Apparently it's over for Agfa Photo - german wireservices say that the bid by Photo-Me has been rejected by creditors as it would have resulted in a "negative sales price". The Cerberus bid floundered amidst haggling over names rights to "Agfa Photo". Fuji has apparently announed it is interested - but in the lab equipment division only.

Agfa Photo now has no more funds to buy raw materials, current stock will be used up and that's that.

I'm afraid it's over... It looks as if there will be no more Scala, no more Portrait 160 - two of my favorite films.

Yes, it's over, AGFA is going broke. Obviously he photo-Me offer was not acceptable, it sound as if they did not want to pay but getting paid for taking it, nonetheless not willing to give a job warranty dor at least 400 people.

There are some other investors who are interested in small parts of the company, but that would not mean that any jobs survive.

Agfa started with 1800 people a year ago, 1000 are still left now, they'll all get fired.

Tis happens because the Belgian board sold the film division under the pressure of big stockholders and investment fonds who considered to be film, dev and paper a too risky business in a niche and not profitable enuff anyway, even if these top products would run in a niche well.

Long may their soul rot in hell !!! 😡

Putting this into perspective it should increase market share for those that stay in the business and will hopefully secure their success.

I would however like you consider the workers and their families that are now facing an even darker Christmas and beyond. We are losing some material choices, they are losing possibly everything :bang:

To the workforce past and present I thank them for their efforts in trying to keep the business alive !!

The same can be said for Kodak employees, many of whom have been told to hit the road. I was in Rochester recently and the effects of these reduncies can clearly be seen.
