With some regularity, we get a question about the 40 cron-c or 40 rokkor-m. Usually, part of the discussion involves how it fares versus the 35 pre-asph 4th, and whether for 1/3 of the price, it can equal the King of Bokeh.
Many members think highly of the 40cron/40rokkor (myself included). Some even think it is the equal of the 4th pre-asph. Unfortunately, I no longer own the 4th, so cannot perform a definitive controlled test of what each of these lens' signature looks like at wide open (2) and at mid range (5.6). By controlled, I mean:
1) same subject,
2) same lighting,
3) same film,
4) exposure
5) development (ideally on same roll)
Only under these identical conditions can the lens' respective signatures really be compared. All too often we submit examples of our lens' capabilities that vary under wildly different conditions, and wildly different subjects, making it difficult to isolate the actual difference attributable purely to signature rendering.
This is not a test to determine who has the best bokeh or signature (as that is entirely subjective and personal). As I've said before, one man's militant bokeh is another man's smooth bokeh. Rather it is to provide a controlled, factual, record of what these two lenses render under identical conditions.
So the big question, are there any members who own both the 40cron/40rokkor and the 35 4th pre-asph currently, and who would be willing to undertake such an effort?
