And I was thinking Leica lenses are expensive...

From the looks of those Zeiss & Sigma lenses, the ones in the $4000 price range, those are video lenses, intended for use shooting "motion pictures" on the Canon HD video platform. They are not intended for still camera usage.

I've stumbled across the comparable Leica lenses, the ones they make for HD video, and they're really pricey as well.

Best,
-Tim

I'm thankful for Cosina to make good and compact M mount lenses which are not jaw dropping in price. I was thinking about Leica been out of wack until I have seen this:

Zeiss and Sigma for 4K per lens.

Zeiss has appealing shapes of night floor pee vase and sure shot weight for it of 1390g. For 28mm lens.

You think that's bad, look up the cameras they are designed for. Makes me glad I'm not a videographer.

I have a Zeiss microscope in one of my labs with a 5 lens turret, currently full, with $500,000 worth of lenses. Different purposes, and different tolerances. Sometimes you need what you need.

A magnifying glass from a Cracker Jack box not good enough for you Marty?

Yes, but only for frying ants* in summer.

* This used to be a passtime for small boys. I appreciate that it is welfare unfriendly and pointless. I do not advocate killing ants for no good reason.

If they sold as many of those dear lenses as (say) Leica have sold 50mm Summicrons I expect they'd be a lot cheaper and they'd have a production line turning them out day and night.

Some of the dearer Canon lenses are still made in ones and twos by hand; I think their longest cost £60k the last time I heard of it.

Regards, David

PS And, of course, they have to be made to an amazing accuracy; especially when you compare it with (say) the wavelength of light.

I just didn't know what Sigma makes cine lenses. Crappiest lens brand, IMO. I'm in the broadcast since 1991, my bad. Here is the picture of my work desk before C happened.

As far as I know, the Zeiss Otus line (28mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4, and 85mm f1.4), at over $4000 each, are intended for still photography.

Exactly:

"Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 44.8mm equivalent focal length."
So I could use this 4K+ USD one kilo + chunk on my film and digital Rebels. 😀

With few couple of exceptions Sigma may have been pretty bad 20+ years ago but times have changed. The Sigma Art series includes some of the best lenses ever produced for consumers; most of the Art lenses trounce equivalent Canon EF L lenses by any metric and some are basically on par with Zeiss Otus.

I'm still in the opposite opinion. Sigma has to come with focus calibration dock station to deal with its crappy AF. L series AF just works out of the box and L are unbeatable on rendering.
As for Otus, I can't take those ugly heavy ducklings for serious. 🙂
