Picked up a cheap XA today. New batteries in... The lightmeter works. When I put the little lever in the bottom at "check" the camera sounds. When I turn the lever to self timer it beeps and seems to work. But the shutter doesn´t fire when the self timer should activate it or when when I press the orange button. Easy fix or big problem? What´s your experience?

Don't take me wrong on that: have you cocked the shutter ?

Roland.

Peot - sometimes the cover/slider is not properly seated in its grooves or there might be dirt in the grooves.

Peot: Is it a proper (SR44W or equivalent) fresh battery? If the battery check is positive (continuous beep), then it's likely not the battery, but it doesn't hurt to check with a new battery.

If none of these resolve the issue, you may need a tech to look into the problem.

The battery check beeps once when I turn the lever to the battery check position. The only chance to get it it to beep again is to press the orange releasebutton...

Eh, just in case, is this your first time *ever* using an XA?

I remember the first time I got one I was so sure that I got a lemon because I've *never* heard a shutter click that is as muted as the XA (I was using digital or OM-2 at that time).

I find that if you open up the back (meaning the cover is covering the lens), you can test the shutter anytime after rotating the thumb wheel, of course. Another advantage doing it this way, is you can actually see if the shutter is moving at all.

It's supposed to beep continuously whenever the lever is turned to "check" - it sounds like your battery is nearly dead.

It´s working. New to Xa:s I didn´t notice that the little button at the bottom that you push to rewind the film was stuck. Once I got it out again the camera seems to work properly. I´m nearly ashamed to let you know that I didn´t pay more then $9US for it.

Mine beeps cont even with flat batteries, and it will run on the cheap Ch 30 on a card for 1£ jobs. Your XA may need fresh AgOs, also clean the battery contacts with alcohol or zippo fluid, dont use anything abrasive.

Hey you may have a working camera.
