Well, you're in luck, because I ran into Peter Garrett himself at Town Hall. I was running a few errands to pick up some camera related nic nacs (batteries, filters etc) and there he was, selling the Big Issue with a homeless man at Town Hall.

Anyway, the photo's start about half way through this set, I'd separate them more but Flickr only allows 3 sets max for free accounts :-/

Enjoy!

It's a thing they give to homeless people to sell so they can make some money, it's just sort of like a weekly magazine. I never read it personally. But hey, at least it's giving them some cash and something to do I suppose.

Cheers,

Yup, He's a Labor Politician down here now, so he was doing some good old fashion politician work. Labor is the current federal opposition party, although with the election coming maybe not for so long ;-)

Cheers,

funny thing: I actually never heard of Midnight Oil until I hear them on XM last night.
I can't remember the song name, but I did listen to it to completion.

"Beds Are Burning" is the one that seems to get the most airplay here in the States.

I went to Oil gigs, different places. The Oils were "our pub band" in Newcastle/gosford/northern Sydney. I remeber the early days. I'm an old man now so The Oils must be older too. We had to wait a fair while for the first LP. I played it to death. "Koala Sprint" etc. It was very well produced we thought. It was exactly the sound they had on stage. There was an earlier EP but I never saw it anywhere. PG would throw sweat on the front 3 or 4 rows. He used to drown in sweat he was so manic on stage. He would chuck lollies or Oil's buttons into the "crowd" (100-200) as well. The top of the bill at that time was Cold Chisel. Later on I went to a Oil's new year's eve gig where they were top of the bill. The second on the bill was INXS and the first warm up act was Mental As Anything who got slow clapped etc, they were starting out. 77 or 78 or 79, I lost track. I do remember the Oil's pushing "death to disco" (we were so happy when Xanadu tanked too).

The '83 album "10,9,8,7" etc was the end for us. The Oils "sold out" their pub base and actually made a promo-video and were then showing up on TV which they had avoided so hard for so long; it was when they didn't want any fame or bull**** gigs and fans and stuff. They rejected "the biz" and the marketing guys outright. And big crowds too ; it was like when Dylan treated his audience as not so important and just did music he was into.

I wouldn't describe myself as a Midnight Oil fan because I love Classical music and not rock but I'm a real Peter Garrett fan. I think it will be very apt that after the next Federal election, he'll be the Minister for the Environment..

I've liked Midnight Oil for ages, they were activists before it was cool, and the fact that PG is in the thankless job of politics, lawyer or no, when he could be making more money as a reasonably known rock act just proves it. Great music, thanks for the shots.
