Dear Board,

I have a Nikkormat FT2 that works perfectly, light meter and all. It's as ugly as sin, but it works. I have a Nikkormat FT2 with the battery compartment corroded. It's black and sexy and also works but with no light meter. I'd try to swap out the meter from the ugly working one to the sexy broken one, but I know I'd screw it up.

I suppose I could live forever using an actual light meter with the pretty one when needed? But if I can't, or don't want to do that, can anyone suggest a good place for Nikkormat repairs.

Regards,

Any reputable repair shops should have no issues with repairing a camera from the '70's. A good place to start is the Mikon USA web page of recommended shops

Before I sent it off I’d place a drop of penetrating oil (special oil) around the perimeter of the battery case. Let it sit a day and try to open it. If it doesn’t come off try one more drop and wait a day and try again. This will probably work.

Penetrating oil is sold at hardware stores and made to do this kind of thing and it works. It’s designed to work on rusted threaded pipe joints and similar.

Don’t over do it. Just a tiny drop at a time so you don’t get it into the internals of the camera.

Good luck.
