I just got an e-mail from Schmap.com that one of my photos on Flickr has been short-listed for their Lake Tahoe guide. I never heard of these guys but the site is very cool and I hope they select my photo for their guidebook software.

Hi etrigan63.
One of my photos is in the Schmap guide to Denver. I skimmed through their T&C's and it seemed that there was nothing too sinister in there.
Good luck with getting picked!
Which photograph is it?

It was this picture of the Lone Eagle Grill on Lake Tahoe

No pay, only credit. But, to their credit & in contrast to some other companies (which shall remain nameless, if only because I can't remember their names), they do ask permission before using your shot(s).

Will they pay you? or are they just using it...

At the end of the day, if they wanted a touristy snapshot I took using a toy camera, I was not too bothered about them not paying. That being said I do understand the reasons fopr not wanting to let work be used for free.

Well, as P.T. Barnum used to say, "there's no such thing as bad publicity". Any reference to my photos is a plus for me. Would have been nice if they paid, but at least they asked and they do link back to my flickr account.

They picked one of my flickr photos for their Barcelona guide. Since I'm not in this for the money, I was happy to give them permission -- they seemed legit.

quite right, if you're not putting food on the table by taking photos then I can't see any harm, they do link after all and it is nice for us lowly amateurs to get recognition.

They have used 2 pictures of mine, one for the Brussels guide and one for the Sheffield, UK guide. I also have been asked and agreed to others using pictures of Hungary for their website. Schmap seem to do good guidebooks, and are very polite.

They should have a little graphic badge to hand out to us for our websites (those of us that have them). Something like "Schmap Selected Photographer" or something like that. Just for recognition.

They picked one of mine for their guide to Houston, seems harmless.

I like that concept. When I do get around to making a proper website I am ging to mention the Schmap feature, but that is about all the use I have for it...
I want a badge. A proper baadge, to go on my camera bag!

They used one of mine for their Cambridge, UK guide.

When they asked me I did some rooting around - there are long threads on flickr about them - but decided it was harmless enough.

I received one of those schmap mails for a photo a while ago but I refused. I don't mind that they don't pay anything but it's pretty obvious that they just do a tag search for a city and then start sending out e-mails.

Not to take anything away from your photo, etrigan63,but getting shortlisted for schmap is pretty much like receiving a letter in the mail saying that you've possibly won $1'000'000.

Well, I got approved. My photo is in the 4th Ed. Schmap Guide to Lake Tahoe.

Yay me!

FWIW, I guess I can say I have actually published a photo...

and yes, a camera bag badge (even if it is a CafePress button) would be nice.
