Anyone planning to get the new Canon S90?

Images on Flickr looks pretty good.
High ISO and low light shots are not too shabby either......

I just bought one (was lucky to get the last one) at the local Best Buy. Seems that they are sold out at all of the major online retailers. I should be posting a brief overview and some shots soon :)

But so far, it really is a shooters camera. The rings are absolutely wonderful. Extremely quick to make adjustments on the fly in any situation.

Great. Can't wait to see the results. I'm looking for a small little digi compact to bring for travels and i have a feeling this camera might be it.

I wonder if Nikon will ever get their sh*t together and make a half decent point and shoot that warrants any attention at all? :p

Canon seem to able to bring them out one after the other!

I'd like one, but I already have an S80. I'll have to convince the old lady 'its broken' before replacing it.... The S90 looks like a HUGE improvement.

Keith, I do agree wholeheartedly!!!!

For a camera powerhouse that is one of the bigger companies around, it is just such a shame that their P & S are no where near what the Canon's, Ricoh's, Sigma's, Pana's can do.

I was going to buy one, but after playing with it at the local camera store I passed on it. The build is nice, but the horrible distortion and lack of any DoF is enough to turn me off of it.

I was just checking the DP Review site and their quick and dirty opinion of the pre-release version they got hold of a while ago indicates a pretty good camera. A full test will be interesting ... my poor old (but highly respected) A620 is well due for an upgrade and it would be nice to have a p/s that shoots raw!

Without a viewfinder? No way!
This poor middle aged guy sometimes leaves home without his reading glasses - my arms are getting too short for a 3" screen :D

The barrel distortion is so bad the lens is like a 28mm fisheye.

Do you work for Nikon, or are you just trolling on a subject (point and shoots) that you don't know anything about? You do realize that essentially all small p+s lenses are heavily corrected in software. They have to be, to make them that small and (relatively) inexpensively.

Every manufacturer does the same, and the S90 doesn't show particularly more distortion than other pocketable cameras. It's about average. And of course it doesn't have much DoF... none of these kinds of cameras do. They will eventually, but right now the small sensors mean it would be extremely expensive--you'd need an f0.5 lens and a good way to fold it into that small body. ;P If that's what you need, a consumer P+S is not the tool for you (and hasn't been for at least two decades).

I'm looking to replace the old Sony P&S my wife uses and this is on the list.

But I'm not in a hurry and I want to wait for the reviews and sample images.

The Sony DSCWX1 is another one on the list that I'm waiting to see samples from.

Why not install CHDK on your A620 and get raw shooting abilities?

YMMV, but I've found that shooting raw on the A-series (and a lot of the SD series) doesn't really buy you much. There isn't the resolution, or overall image quality, for RAW to accomplish much unless you want white balance control.

I install CHDK on all my Canons for the scripting capabilities, but the RAW doesn't get much use.

I wish I worked for Nikon so I could let them know how bad their PnS cameras are...

Sorry if that sounded rude. Just been a rash lately of people complaining that P+S cameras are, well, what they are--instead of something much nicer and more expensive. I understand barrel distortion concerns, though.

For those of you who are interested, the S90 is getting a lot of attention, reviews and coverage at the dpreview forums. Ya'll should check it out if you are considering the purchase of this camera.

I love mine :)

I just ordered one from Amazon, after finding that it was not available from local shops. Decided I wanted something small to carry around in urban areas. Also, I always regretted not getting an LX3 when I had the chance, and the S90 is smaller than the LX3 is a bonus.

The barrel distortion at wide angles doesn't bother me too much, it is easily corrected with software.
