I've got an early (chromed brass) 35/2.8 that I'd like to service - nothing wrong with it, just a little dust I'd like to get out. The rear portion is straight-forward, but the front optical block seems a bit trickier to access, as there is no obvious point to engage a tool. If you've been inside one of these, any tips on how to proceed? Thanks.

I’m not sure about the chrome-on-brass Canon 35/2.8, but on other lenses, the front trim ring will need to be removed before you can access the spanner slots for the front element group. Try using a rubber sink stopper (or something like that) of the appropriate size that will grip the ring but not touch the glass. Once unscrewed, you should be in business.
