Does anyone have any information about the compatibility of Aperture and the M8? Has the M8 been added yet to the list of cameras that will work with Aperture, or will it be able to work with Aperture in the future?

I've been playing around a little bit with this program and would like to be able to use it with my soon to be arriving M8 (c'mon Tony Rose!!).

Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

Gman,
I too am an Apple user- I don't know about Aperture however I can tell you Lightroom works wonders, is fun and has a cool user interface. You can try it for free from Adobe's web site.

Cheers,
Ted

I've read about Lightroom and it seemed like something worth checking out- I think the LFI had an article about it recently. Is this the beta version that's on the Adobe site?

I think the beta of Lightroom is still up on the Adobe site. The beta is suppose to self-destruct at the end of Feb. The Aperture support page (here) still doesn't list my rd1s, nor your m8. You m8 people have a better chance of getting Apple's support. I fear we rd1 folks have skinny hope of being supported by Aperture.

I have been starting to use Apple Aperature with my M8 files. It does not seem as seemless as other cameras, such as my Canon EOS 5D. What I did is I copied the SD card images to my computer. I have LightZone, and my system read the M8 images as LightZone images. Then I opened up Aperature. I was able to import the images. Two points. Aperature could not read the M8 Files directly, and when I was in Aperature, the files did not seem to operate in the same manner as my Canon files. I am still experimenting. I believe that if you have Photoshop on your system, the M8 files will be read as psd files. So, my conclusion as of now is that you must have either Photoshop or LightZone. I also believe that Apple must do more work to have Aperature work with the M8 files.

After importing my files to Aperature, I set up the Capture One LE Program, which gave me a much better view of the capabilities of the M8. I was pleasantly surprised. I had taken some images in NYC (I am from LA) on an overcast day, and the images were beautiful. There was a qualitity to the images that surprised me. They were better than my 5D (which i love). I am a new subscriber to the forum, and I have been entertained by the dialog. However, if the images from my first roll are an example of the capabilities of the M8, Leica has a winner. I am aware of all the problems the camera has had on its launch. This forum has made me aware of all of the problems. I look forward to photographing with the M8 and seeing the work of other photographers. One of my photographic influences has been Ernest Haas, and I wonder what he would have been able to do with the M8.

I am not using Apeture; a similar experience when I looked at images I shot on Sunday on C1. It was overcast and I expected rather dull pictures given the quality of the light. What a surprise when I saw them in C1. They glowed and had a quality that is hard to describe but the images are really nice and they look much better than I expected.

Aperture does not support M8 raw files. Jpegs are no problem, but since Aperture was designed for a Raw workflow there isn't anything you can do that can't be done in Photoshop directly.
The M8 has not been added to the list of compatible camera's. It probably needs an OSX update. Apple is likely to support more popular camera's first, but since Aperture is aimed at pro's (or advanced amateurs) just like the M8 they should, and probably will support the M8 in the near future.
Hit the feedback button in Aperture to tell Apple you'd like M8 support. It just might help.

M8 RAW files are in the DNG format.

Aperture reads DNG files. I don't have Aperture, but this little footnote may help:

DNG files must be generated by the Adobe DNG Converter, with the "Convert to Linear Image" option turned off, and created from RAW formats that are otherwise already supported by Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later.

This is not a "it does not support M8" issue, but a "it may not support all kinds of DNG files" issue. If it does not read your M8's DNG files, you may just have to reprocess them using the Adobe DNG Converter. I've never had to use it, so I don't know if this is feasible.

See, I knew there was another use for bottom-loading on the M8 other than battery! 😀

You got me. I have been shooting a lot of film panoramics with my 6x17. Of course I should have used the term my first sd card. Oh well. By the way does using Capture One raw converter equivilent to using Adobe Raw Converter to allow Aperature to use M8 files?

Well, i do have Aperture. I even use it daily for all my Canon shots and it does not read M8 raw files. Unless you convert your file and loose quality in the process Aperture and M8 raw files are incompatible for now. Apple needs to come with support for this camera, like it did with all kinds of digicams that appeared on the market after Aperture's first launch.

Problem with Apple and M8

Problem with Apple and M8

As far as I can see you cannot use Apple iPhoto or Aperture with M8 Raw files. And there doesn't seem to be any information available as to when/if support will become available. This is disappointing since M8 Raw files are in DNG format which I believe is open.

What to do about it? I am moving to Lightroom and Photoshop. Lightroom is excellent for organising photos and making basic tweaks. On its own it does what 95% of photogritaphers would want. Photoshop CS2 integrates nicely with Lightroom if more sophisticated editing is needed.

As for Capture One shipped with the M8, I gave up on it in 15 minutes. It is too difficult to operate and understand, i.e. non-intuitive, and doesn't have proper organising features. Maybe though it has some special M8 features? I would say only use in emergencies.

Lightroom is available as a public beta with production software out shortly. Photoshop CS2 has been available for some time. Also there is a Photoshop CS3 beta available which seems to have make use of Apple's Intel hadware, theby improving speed presumably. I have not looked at this yet and wonder if anyone else has in the context of partnering with Lightroom.

I contacted Leica NJ several months ago and was told there were discussions going on with Apple about adding the M8 to Aperture's list of compatible cameras but they wouldn't say when/if it would ultimately happen.

Here's an update on the issue of M8 files and Apple Aperture:

There's someone on the Leica Camera user forum that's created a work-around to get Aperture to recognize M8 files converted with Adobe DNG converter. I can attest that it does work (after some effort) and seems pretty good so far. You can check out the detailed instructions at this link:

Good luck!

I have been using the above mentioned workaround for the past few days successfully. Not as complicated as it sounds.
