Never thought I would see the day. Too bad I sold the R-D1 a while back. I am downloading the update now. This means original R-D1 RAW files, not just converted DNG files, are now supported in Aperture and iPhoto. Enjoy.

Its finally happened...

Apple's Aperture imaging software is now compatible with the RD-1 RAW files with the new Mac OS X 10.5.3 system update.

Time for me to get Aperture now and try it out. If any of you have an RD-1 and Aperture I'd be interested in hearing about your results and thoughts.

Best,

Aperture 2.0 and R-D1s

Aperture 2.0 and R-D1s

I've had my R-D1s for a couple of months now (new, from Japan) and have recently tried Aperture 2.0 (after converting files to DNG) for post-processing and enhancing. So far, I've been disappointed with the Aperture results compared to using the Epson RAW software. I've found that the Epson software produces clearer, sharper pictures with higher detail (and better contrast) with the default settings. I usually just adjust the color temperature and exposure to get brilliant results. Aperture, on the other hand, requires a lot more tweeking with sharpness, edges and other parameters to get the same kind of clarity and proper contrast adjustment. Even then , I find there are still subtle, unwanted shadows (esp with portraits in low light) that need further adjusting. In the end, all can be done with Aperature but I find I spend a lot less time adjusting photos with the Epson RAW software compared to Aperature. Perhaps the conversion to DNG with final adjustments in Aperature results in some decreased contrast and sharpness in the photos that requires more adjusting.

I'm sticking with the Epson RAW software for the time being. However, will download the new Apple update and see if that changes the initial clarity and contrast of the RAW photos.

Cheers,

Hello,

APERTURE 2.1 with the new Mac OS X 10.5.3 system update, not recognize my _EPSXXX.ERF RAW files...only JPG
Any idea about it?

Thanks

I had to install the Epson PhotoRaw software before Leopard would know what to do with ERF files. I did NOT install the Photoshop plugin.

After the install, Quickview and the iPhoto worked just fine. Don't have Aperture to test.

You could try mensogi's approach -- installing Epson PhotoRAW but it's strange that would be required given that the two apps are not associated.

You could try trashing your Aperature preferences. That often does the trick in such instances.

Being that I'm a Lightroom user I can't give first hand advice / experience.

Thanks for yours answers.

I have EPSON's software installed and I have erased too the APERTURE preferences. But I cannot open the ERF files...

This is the second (and the last) opportunity for APERTURE. 😡

Thanks

My theory was that Apple was merely delegating the work of rendering the RAW files to some library that gets installed by Epson PhotoRAW. Haven't looked into it much, but the Apple update comes with remarkably little documentation.

If my theory were true, it does sound like a really clever way to support lot's of different raw formats, especially the more obscure ones.

On the other hand Leopard had no problem out of the box with 10d CRW's and 40d CR2's.

Hello,

OK!

The problem is that the last RAWCameraUpdate is for ¨Aperture 2 & iPhoto 7.1.2¨ and not for Aperture 2.1 (?)

If your Aperture version is the 2.1, try this solution:

1.- Open with Pacifist SW or similar, the last update pkg ¨RAWCameraUpdate¨.
2.- Copy the ¨RawCamera.bundle" file in the System/Library/CoreServices¨ (replace the old file)....Backup first, please.
3.- And open the ERF EPSON files!

Thanks
