Compulsive Tinkerer
I've decided to get a MF Rangfinder, and seeing as how I have enjoyed my Zorkis so much, I thought I'd go for a Russian one. I'm looking at one for sale on *bay, in Alex-Photo's store, the Moskva 5 w/ 6x6 mask. Anyone have any thoughts on these cameras?

In order to finance further Rangefinderdom GAS, I'm selling my Rolleiflex outfit, it's in the classifieds.

Yes, a Moskva in good shape is a decent performer. The Moskva 5 is made on a cast aluminum frame and has an improved shutter/lens. If light-tight and properly adjusted, it should take an excellent picture.
Also, Alex-Photo is one of the very best dealers in FSU equipment to be found. If he says it's good, it will be good.

I've had a Moskva 5 ... it was OK ... nothing to get too excited about. Have you thought about the Iskra? It's 6x6 rather than 6x9 but in my opinion it's much better built. The Moskva was kinda' crude where as the Iskra seems a little more refined ...

I have a Moskva 5 and it takes excellent photos. I took a bit of fiddling with the rangefinder and lens to get the focus right on, but now it is plenty sharp.
Attached photo is a poor scan, and low res, but gives you a pretty good idea of what you can do. On original print you can see every drop of water coming off the paddle.

A good Moskva 5 can be very good. The 6x9 slides look gorgeous. However,
- For hand-held work you really need to keep them to 1/100s and faster
- they are "left handed"
- separate VF and RF
If you are wanting a MF Russian folder, I'd suggest you go for the Iskra (I). It has a bright, combined VF/RF, unit focusing lens, auto film advance and has a more conventional layout. These cameras have one weak point - their film advance mechanism - so check with the seller that it is functioning correctly. Those that are broken will have red windows fitted. Probably the best-bang-for-the-buck folder out there. Of course, it can only do 6x6.
I have a load of Iskra (I and II) and somewhat fewer Moskva 5 shots here and here
