I've posted a similar thread in the Fuji section, but since I want a different make this forum is probably the better choice.
My Fuji X10 is dead. When I turn it on it displays "FOCUS ERROR".
I sent it to Fuji who want £307 to repair it, which is more than the current cost of a new one. The camera has had very little use from new but because I have no proof of purchase Fuji will not do a warranty repair. I feel rather aggrieved about this so I will never by another Fuji product.
So I need to find something similar, but NOT a Fuji. The two essential features for me are
(1) a viewfinder
(2) reasonable build quality (ie. a lens which doesn't wobble around).
I don't need interchangeable lenses or lots of megapixels or any gimmicks, but I would like reasonable image quality. I liked the traditional styling of the X10 but it's battery life was poor.
I've tried Sony NEX and Olympus Pen E but hated the lack of a viewfinder.
Any suggestions gratefully received? I'm happy to buy used for better value. I'm no longer one of those people who can't sleep at night because there is a newer model with more megapixels!

Panasonic recently released a compact with an electric viewfinder. Not sure how it performs, but that could be an option for you...

Nikon P series (7100 is the current model, I believe) is analogous to the Canon G series.

I am very happy with my Ricoh GRD4 + 28mm Voigtlaender viewfinder.
My next digital camera will be the GR (+35mm viewfinder).

Thanks for the replies so far.
The Canon G and Nikon P series both look like possibilities, but the Canon G range looks bewildering and neither viewfinder looks as good as the Fuji.
The add-on viewfinder of the Ricoh doesn't appeal, sorry.
The one which appeals to me the most, with its big clear viewfinder and Leica-like styling, is the X100. But unfortunately it's made by those nasty Fuji people and after my experience with the X10 I'm determined to avoid that make.

fuji is very popular around here...how is it that you had no proof of purchase?

The reality is that none of the brands would service the camera without proof of purchase. Nikon is infamously bad with this.
No one else makes a proper vf compact anyway/

Nikon V1?
Something with a prime lens and a hotshoe to clip in a finder, like Sigma DP2M, Leica X1, Ricoh GR?
Pentax Q with clip on finder?

Have the X20 and absolutely love it. Had the X10-and the new viewfinder is really great!

Another vote for the Nikon V1 from me. Hard to ignore it at the prices they now sell for - I got a white one from digital rev last week for £188 including the 10mm (28mm eq.) lens. It's a superb camera.
(Beware though, buying from digital rev or other places like it and shipping overseas may invalidate the warranty which could leave you in the same position you are in with fuji!)

The Nikon V1 doesn't have a viewfinder as standard, which is absolutely essential for me. Using a camera with just a screen is like using my mobile phone.

Erm.... Check again - Nikon V1 has an electronic viewfinder built into it.
Of course if you want an optical viewfinder then we are talking about different things!

refusing to buy a camera brand because they have the same repair policy as every other brand just makes no sense...
what company does warranty work without proof of purchase?
a one person boycott accomplishes nothing...

No, but it's a personal choice which many of us make.
As it happens though, Fujifilm fixed my grey market Klasse S under warranty, and I showed no receipt and bought it outside of Japan.
Off the top of my head I'm not running any personal boycotts of my own at the moment, but I have done, and am sure I will again.

I can second the recommendations for a Nikon V1. The built-in EVF is great and image quality is excellent.

Not an easy situation. Not many choices. It's G15 or P7100. Or...
I was shopping the same market, considered the X20 and decided to take the plunge with the X100s. I was lucky enough to find one on Amazon before shipments dried up. No regrets! It's a complete delight to use. Zoomless, of course, but still here's simply no equivalent from another manufacturer. If I were in your shoes, I think I'd hold my nose and go Fuji again in order to experience this camera (when available). Depending on your shooting style, the X100 might also be viable. I wanted the faster autofocus and faster manual focus of the X100s.
YMMV.

The finders of the G15 and the P7100 are crap, tiny peep holes compared to
the V1 finder.
