Just a stupid question, I see a lot of people have been selling M8's in the classifieds here lately, all around the 3100-3000 dollar mark and just wondering if they are being bought or not.

I myself have a little interest in such a used M8 but still cant get my head around the idea of buying a used digital camera with no warranty. That said its still neat and falling into my price range hopefully sooner rather then later.

Yes, that is always the question - you see the price posted in the classified, but you always wonder if it sold, and what price did it actually sell at...

I considered an M8 used, but after looking at a used one and a new 8.2, I decided to spring for the latest. Of course this was after reviewing the differences at the Leica booth during Photo Plus so I might have been swayed by a couple of the new features.

With the changing economic times, quite a few M8s have been for sale here in Norway. To hefty prices, but what they were eventually sold for, I don't know.

Leica M8 is the only digital camera I know of that you can buy 'more' warranty, if you decide to go for this up-grade program. Still it could well be cheaper not to buy an upgrade and simply pay any repair that might pop up. After all: Buying a M8 for 3,000 $ you have saved a lot of money.

I've seen a couple of demo units come up on ebay for between 3500 & 4000. These include a one year leica warranty. This is the option I took for getting an M8 - seems like a decent compromise between cheaper & warranty.

what are you going to do with that demo camera in 1 year when the warranty runs out? will it just explode on you?

if i had that little faith in something, i wouldn't touch it even with a 1 year warranty.

Has anyone sent an out-of-warranty M8 to Leica for repair?

What did they charge you?

Someone else here claimed there was a $2000 to $2500 minimum for out-of-warranty service.

Seems like one would really be stuck if one had a minor electronic problem, not to mention a catastrophic failure.

Wow... if that's the case, that minimum is just over the top! I was thinking that it would be like any other repair bill meaning parts + labor. My M8, which is still under warranty, suffered impact damage and the repair for the the rf & shutter was a little over $500 (not covered)...

Avotius: personally, the warranty was a factor in my choosing the M8 over the RD1... a little sense of security I guess. But if the seller is reputable and the M has been "problem free", the prices are very good compared to even just a few months ago.

I luckily have a 3 year mac warranty on mine. Not sure how mac is with camera repairs though. Anyone ever have experience with them?
