Fairfax media won attention on RFF and with photographers Down Under when they began running a photography competition at the beginning of this year. Part of the interest was that the competition would be judged by the award-winning photographers at Fairfax.

The competition is still running but it has to be asked who will be left to judge it?

A sad day. I've been reading The Age (part of Fairfax) for 55 years and the photos have often been special. The management there is not famous for making good decisions, and this is just another one. Now that they're relying on Getty for most images we will be treated to the stock pics that you can see anywhere on the web. I'm continuing my subscription for the time being because the standard of their reporting on important matters is still good.

I remember back in the old days of my youth (1999), I was windsurfing in Melbourne on a particularly cold summers day. An Age photog came down to shoot the cold, and ended up staying for about 3-4 hours shooting us windsurf. I ended up as a page 3 feature the following morning, half page image. I have the image framed on my wall now.
Another sad day.
