Actually, wide and ultrawide lenses flare less than medium and long focus lenses... Especially the retrofocus type wides are quite efficient in cutting flare, even with the sun in the frame. It has something to do with the fact that most rays entering the wide lens all contribute to the true image, while in a long lens, like a telephoto, the front element is exposed to light from all kind of angles but the true image-forming ones are restricted to a very narrow angle - all the rest just bounce around the lens barrel and produce problems...
Besides noticing that my 17mm and 24mm SLR lenses don't flare at all, neither my yashica CC's 35mm f/1.8 lens, i have also read this thing in a book 🙂 so no, i'm not that wise to come up myself with such an explanation.
