A friend of mine asked to ride along sometime when I went on a photo trip, so since I had to go up to Staunton, VA to drop off the donation of a stereo 120 Sputnik to the Camera Heritage Museum, I took him along.

I like to take the back roads along the way, mostly to avoid any tie-ups on the Interstate highway, and because it’s just more relaxing seeing the landscape from a different viewpoint than you can get at 70 mph. There are also many places one can stop to take photos, as long as you are careful as to where you pull off the road.

I was shooting with the Nikon D80 and Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105mm 1:3.5-5.6G ED VR lens, and my riding partner had his trusty Nikon P500. I showed him how getting on the road early got us some great scenery as the sun came up over the mountains and ridges, explaining to him about the “Golden Hours” just after sunrise and before sunset. He saw what I meant right away, as the low sun angle threw great shadows over the landscape, and the morning light accentuated what tree color there was.

Below are some samples of the trip.

Sounded like a fun trip. Beautiful light & love that small general store. Va has some nice stores like that along it's rural roads. Hope your friend caught some good shots as well.
