I went home to Indiana for Thanksgiving, and managed to sneak in some time for photography.

I've split the photos into five groups, to be presented here as they get posted on Flickr over the next few days. All photos taken with the Nikon D300s and DX 18-105mm Nikkor.

Here is one from the first group, with a link to the others in that group.

Barn Complex

Barn Complex

A complex of barns and other structures mark what remains of an old family run farm that has likely been sold to developers, and the land is leased until some other use is found for it. Its closeness to the new Honda plant in Greensburg, IN means there could be some auto parts factory standing here someday.

Nice sets PF.
I wonder if that barn is timber framed (hewn or sawn timber with pegged mortise and tenon joinery, post supported by foundation). I would guess it is. Out west (Oregon, California, Washington) most of the old barns were built using the pole barn method (round logs or sawn timber, bolted together, post embedded in ground) which doesn't hold up as well over time. There are a few timber framed barns around here, and you can usually tell by the straight walls and straight ridge line :)

If I recall, Greensburg is the town famous for the tree growing on the roof of the courthouse.

Yes it is, and still does. You just can't see it for the scaffolding. They have no plans to remove it while renovating the tower.

Thanks, Colton. There are some pole structures around, but most of those are of the big shed style for parking tractors in, and are more recent in construction.

The next county north is Amish country, and you don't see too many old barns falling apart up there.

Indiana Skies

Indiana Skies

If nothing else, Indiana has some wide open views of the sky, especially in farming country where the fields are large, and the trees are few. Harvest time adds its own spectacle when the dust in the air turns the setting sunlight into shades of russet, gold, and orange.

If the clouds are cutting down the light, then I take their photo just to show them who’s who.

Edge lighting to make the clouds glow, adding some dust for color, sunsets during harvest are always interesting.

Moon Over Monument by P F McFarland, on Flickr
Timing. Is. Everything. Not many times have I stopped by this monument to find all the flags flying in a stiff breeze, and to get the moon aligned too? Perfect. Now if they would just fix that center pole.

Tearful Goodbye by P F McFarland, on Flickr
As the sun leaves us for another night, it will be my last Indiana sunset for a while.

This concludes the photos.

Oh! I didn't even realize that was the same building! I'm sort of like the blind squirrel who finds the nut anyway...
