Just purchased a Epson R-D1 from a member. What a memory trip! Started out sixty years ago with simple cameras - worked my way thru Kodak 35mm to Pentax 35mm to Nikon 35mm to Leica. Sold the Leica stuff to get a job with a newspaper. After a couple of years as a PJ moved into teaching full time. Allowed me to me to work with larger formats ending with 5x7. Digital arrived. Moved from the Nikon 5700 to D100 to D200 to D1 to D2x to D300. Today went out with my Epson R-D1 - new to me R-D1 (thanks Tim) - and a 28mm Voighlander lens. What a difference. I was able to not only look but to see again. C.B was in my head- the moment! While I have and will continue to use the R2A and the R4A -I am sure that they will get little use. CHANGE is the word of the times.

Nice adventure. Mine started with Nikkormat FTN, F3HP, FM2, Olympus Pen, Minox 35, Rollei 35, Minolta 9000 (ugh), Olympus 4Ti, CV Bessa R3A/M, ZI, Leica IIIa, Pany L1, Ricoh Gx200. Probably forgot a few. Having a ball.

Having missed so much my film M cameras, the R-D1 fills me with much joy. The simple act of cocking the shutter does it for me. The rest is gravy. So much more convenient than my M8 getting to the SD card. Love the cool dials. My only complaint is that tinny shutter sound. Since my M8 has the shutter upgrade, its not truly a fair comparison. I just ordered a Luigi basic case (which I like better than the deluxe) to muffle the sound. Now my M lenses can be used more effectively with 2 bodies with different focal lengths. I have to post a nocti pic of my son with that wonderful bokeh at F/1. I no longer care about megapixels. The most fun for me is taking those pics with a precision instrument and cranking away!
 
O.K. Folks-been using the camera for several days-How do you work with it w.r.t. the LCD? If I have it opened then my nose marks it up! If I have it closed can't check result. I know- close it when taking and open when viewing-A PAIN. My solution- pretend the R-D1 is a film camera-close the LCD and just photograph like I would with my Voighlander cameras. What is your solution?

Do you have a protective cover on your LCD screen? I don't have that trouble.
 
I have very oily skin and have never had occasion to complain about getting my LCD screen dirty. Maybe it just doesn't bother me as much as you.

I agree, after years of shooting pro digital and constantly checking my images in the field, it's refreshing to reconsider the operation of my R-D1 as a film camera.
I have gone so far as to intentionally purchase a nice Luigi leather case that is held in place with a retaining tripod-mount screw and a solid, uncut back. I intentionally made it a pain to view (or the actual term is chimp) my images in the field. I'm also shooting all black and white raw images. I can make them color but B&W is better. The R-D1 also performs so much better in raw.
It's a great Leica M-Mount rangefinder, it just happens to take digital images instead of film. I like to shoot the R-D1, a great relaxation from my pro Canon digital.
Keep in mind I am a photojournalist. The R-D1 helps keep me from buring out after taking thousands of images a day.
I only use the screen to reformat my cards or show someone else one of the images I just took - otherwise the image is not developed yet.

Good stuff - hard core old school :) My R-D1 arrives 12/24. This is my 2nd time around.

Fotorr, do you shoot with your right eye to the viewfinder or your left? If you shoot right-eyed, your nose should be safely out of the way of the camera body. I have a friend who shoots left-eyed, and he often accidentally shifts the ISO dial on the back of his Leica M with his nose.

I've also realized that after studying the name of this thread, "Back in 1948" that the majority of my favorite lenses I shoot on my R-D1 were made before 1948, like my 50mm Summitar and my 50 1.4 MIOJ Nikkor.
Yes I have an arsenal of new Voigtlander glass (15, 21 and 28 f:2 Ultron) but those two old 50mm lenses from the old school are my favorites.
I have also added a post image processing program to my system, Tiffen's Dfx V2 Filter Set. This is an amazing program. If you want a filter, mask or vingnette. Polarizing filter, click, soft focus, infrared, pencil drawing, even a kallitype, cyanotype, palladium, platinim or silver print, click, click, click.
It does an amazing job and you can produce prints just like the old masters from 1948 using modern technology. There is a free sample download of the program on Tiffens Web site, www.tiffen.com but the trial version leaves a white dot pattern in all resaved images (until you buy it for $99)
Also I'm not associated with Tiffen in any way, shape or form. Just a photojournalist, newspaper editor and publisher out here in the high plains of Western Nebraska.
Enjoy and keep living like WWII just ended and the Korean conflict hasn't yet begun!

i keep a lens cloth in my pocket at all times :D

did you find the case muffled the sound at all? it's still my biggest bugbear about this camera that i love!
