Bad things going on inside my ql17 gIII.

So, for some reason lately, my ql17 started making a terrible clicking noise at the end of a roll. The camera will still let me advance the film (even at the end of the roll), but just make bad clicking noises. I also discovered that the whole takeup spool thing can easily slip...if I hold my finger on it lightly and advance it, the spool will stay in place.

Also, the film counter refuses to work after 12-14. It just keeps moving back to that point every time I advance it.


One more thing...anyone have any tips to get a sticky aperture ring to work a little nicer?

I had a similar issue with my canonet. It started giving winding issues, skipping a frame every 3 or 4 wind strokes. By the end of the roll the camera would wind but the shutter wouldn't cock. I'll probably have to send it out to be repaired.

I cleaned out the shutter and aperture blades of the same canonet to get it working. In the process I misplaced a small ball bearing which gave the click stops on the aperture ring. After reassembly the aperture ring doesn't click anymore, just a smooth motion. Not exactly a fix but I think I liked it better.

Hah, my aperture ring never clicked...I assumed it wasn't supposed to. 🙂

I have 2 Canonets and neither one of them has ever clicked either. However, they both work fine. Hmmm.....?

I assume, aperture clicks are just helpers (to don't easily change setting accidentally or say, set aperture without looking). Once ring is moved, aperture is set.

try a shorter roll in there. a 24 exposure one, or if you bulk roll then go for like 20 frames. if that fixes it, then...that fixes it 🙂. I had some slippage in the take-up spool on one of my earlier canonets and it was just that the grip on the take-up was giving way to the tension inside the canister from the longer roll.

The aperture ring slipping is not an issue for me...actually moving it is tough...I have to grasp it firmly with 2 fingers, and it has a bad metal-on-metal feel when I move it.
