Has made me decide that I definitely need to buy a zoom lens.... ;)

managed to get these in the warm up ring without, taken with a panasonic G1

The background somehow seems to interfere with the subject on almost all images. Some sort of separation (preferably via aperture, if at all possible) would have benefited those shots immensely.

But I feel your pain, I shoot horse racing a few times a year and it's tough, I don't think I ever took one single shot of a horse I liked.

I'm reasonable at photographing them away from major competitions I confess - but then that's probably because I am far more of a horse woman than a photographer.

I also had only one point from which I could take a photo within 200 metres and only one point to stand along the fence next to people doing the same thing - not excusing but this is why I definitely need a zoom!
 
I like the shot of the horse tail. What lens did you use with your G1? If you are going to be shooting from 200 metres, then perhaps the Panasonic 45 - 200 OIS zoom would be a good choice.
