I have the R-D1, 3 lenses, and a spare battery...
I have a nice crumpler bag which is too BIG, as well as a small digital camera bag which only fits the camera...
What I would really like is a bag, or insert that will fit all the above gear.. and have this bag/insert go inside of my general-purpose messenger bag.
For reference the inside dimensions of the Messenger bag are 4.5" x 5.5" x 11.5".
Any brand/model recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

1 lens on camera and 2 in sleaves. I like it because I can just pull the small pack out of my sholder bag and shoot during lunch. The bag is small enough that I dont get stopped to check my bag at bookstores and museums...Goodluck.

Domke F6, Again
Domke F6, Again
Stephen - the Domke F6 has gotten a lot of press here because of its small size and versatile interior.

I have one and use it with my RD-1, (And Bessa "T"), a lot. The four compartment or a two and a single should work well for you with this bag. Domke wraps are nice for wrapping the extra lenses too. Check it out. Good luck.

The Domke 803 with some judiciously applied scissoring should fit in there. Well padded bottom & sides and very easy to work out of with one body. Cut off the strap and maybe the front & rear pockets and you're down to a lightweight "insert". The bag itself is just a little too small to act as a messenger bag & camera bag.

I purchased a very common looking messenger bag from a clothing store, added a bit of foam to the bottom and inserted this:

Works fine for me. M6 and/or R-D1 + 3-4 lenses + flash and accessories.

I will second usayit's recommendation. I didn't want to buy yet another bag (I have so many) so I got that insert. Works great in my Acme Messenger bag and even my rucksack.

The Domke inserts are great for hacking non-camera bags. Do note that most have no foam in the bottom- but the foam everywhere else is removable, and you can even add more bits of foam to get a more secure fit for smaller cameras- My T2 rides in a nice snug padded insert in my work bag- fully protected, but instantly accessible.

Works fime for me too; it's, however, difficult to fit the camera with a bigger lens (cron 50, canon 50, hexanon 35).

Although it is intended for SLRs, the Billingham 'digital' Hadley makes a super bag for the R-D1; just took mine to France with R-D1 plus (bulky) 28mm 1.9 Ultron, 50mm Summicron and 15mm Heliar plus finder.
I've had Billinghams for years. They are expensive but last for years and remain impressively waterproof.

I don't use a camera bag. Carrying one says "here comes a buffoon, rob me"

I use this same insert in a Mountainsmith waist pack. See:
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27241
One compartment holds the M6 mounted with either a 50 or 35 summicron, while the other lenses go into the remaining two compartments. The tripod and flash are stashed in the main compartment of the waistpack, but not within the insert. The various Domke inserts give quite a bit of flexibility when adapting other cases to photographic use. Good luck!

The perfect solution for the R-D1 + 3 lenses bag conundrum is the Tamrac Explorer 1. I looked at dozens of bags before I found this one. The bag is very small but contains three separate compartments for the camera body and three lenses. The interior proportions are perfect for the R-D1 and its lenses, unlike most bags that are way too large. I also own the Tamrac Explorer 2; a perfect solution for a R-D1 + 5 lenses. http://www.amazon.com/Tamrac-Explorer-DSLR-Camera-Black/dp/B000EOUYHG/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-8284956-6054247?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1186325595&sr=8-1 http://www.amazon.com/Tamrac-Explorer-DSLR-Camera-Black/dp/B000EOUYH6/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/103-8284956-6054247?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1186325595&sr=8-2
