A few months ago, my brother's desktop pc crapped out. I asked him to let me have the old machine with the idea that I would fix it and use it as my desktop.
I don't know specifically what happened to it other than "the motherboard died"
I now have the computer and it is an HP p6310f.
My intent was to simply replace the motherboard, install a new copy of windows 7 and end up with a machine I can use for photography.
After some research, I don't think that is the best plan; apparently the motherboards in these are not very reliable.
And using the existing case and a better motherboard is possibly troublesome as well, I'd need to be sure, for example, all the connections will work with the various parts and front panel stuff.
So...now I'm thinking that it may be a better plan to buy some "bare bones" kit and start with that, use what I can from the old machine--the 1tb drive, the dvd drive, possibly the ram--my new copy of win 7.
I'm not trying to do this on the cheap but I don't like to throw things away that are still usable so I do want to recycle as much of the old machine as I can.
I do not currently have a desktop so the plan is to end up with something other than my laptop for editing. I have a decent monitor that I use with my laptop when I'm editing but that is not especially convenient. And the laptop is a bit slow sometimes.
I mostly use the GIMP and Sagelight, occasionally Microsoft I.C.E., and Picasa--that is primarily for cataloging and organizing my scans. Which I have been getting from Precision Camera with my processing.
Any opinions and or suggestions are much appreciated!
Thanks,
Rob
