The one thing I've found that helps enormously with battery life on the Sigma DP Merrills is to keep live view turned off unless necessary.
I remember when these first came out I saw posts saying that screen on or off didn't seem to have much effect on battery life, so I switched into mutton mode and didn't really try it myself until this summer, when extensive use and testing of the DP Merrill while hiking showed that keeping the live view off significantly extends battery life. With live view off (screen only shows shooting data), I was getting over 200 frames per battery.
Have any other tips/experience to share?

I think the same advice would go for the Ricoh GR which seems to share the same wimpy battery as the Sigma's. JSRockit suggested that I turn the camera off when not in use and since then I've been able to go a full day without needing my spare battery instead of running out of juice halfway in the day.

I went out at the weekend and managed around 200 shots, but I was photographing lots in a short timespan.

Thanks for this one. I've been reviewing a lot of postings lately. My DP2M just arrived today. I'll get to take it for a short outdoor trip tomorrow afternoon.. We'll see how much I absorbed.

Thanks for the tip. I've been debating whether to take mine on a week long cycling trip this fall. There may be a chance to charge a battery once. I only have three. I should probably get a couple more just in case.
