Aloha, Bay Area RFFers.

It looks like I will take my first ever (business) trip to San Francisco at the beginning of May. So naturally I would be grateful for any advice on "must shoot" photo places around town.
I'll probably spend most of my time in the "financial district" (?), close to Market Street, Bay Bridge end. So from what I can see so far, there should be plenty of photo opportunities. Any specific hints on places especially worth visiting?

Thanks in advance,

Markus

Alright! Maxx is coming to Cali!! That's great!! What dates, specifically?

I'll have to find the other thread that was posted recently. Someone else asked the same question, and got a bunch of responses.

:D

Ray, I'll probably be there from May 1 until May 6 or from May 8 until I'm getting bored ;)
The first week is more likely, though.
I looked through the Bay Area forum but did not find any thread like you mention. Would be cool if you could dig it up. Oh, and let's meet for a beer when I'm there ;)

Markus, That's only about 3 blocks form the San Francisco Muesum of Modern Art. They have one of worlds best photograpy collections. A very worthwhile experiance. Jim

I would suggest different views of the Golden Gate Bridge from both the San Francisco side as well as the Marin side. A trip out to Treasure Island in the middle of the Bay is great for Bay Bridge shots as well as downtown San Francsco. I love shooting from there at night. If times allows a trip to Alcatraz is well worth it

Thanks, Jim. The Moma is definitely on my list.

There is so much to see in SF. You got any preferences for subject matter? Sights? Just walking around? Street stuff?

lgpod1 - the Golden Gate Bridge is definitely not on the list, just nothing I could add to the millions of photos already taken there ;)
The Bay Bridge suggestion sounds good, though.

Allan - "Just walking around" pretty much sums up my idea. Street stuff and the occasional tourist attraction.

North Beach day or night is great. If you are a baseball fan ATT park where the Giants play is beautiful. They give tours on non game days. Check out their website

Markus,

Here's One of the Threads. There was another, if I can find it, I'll pass it along, but I also don't want to discourage any input here.

You'll definitely want to bring some walking shoes, but you can get great "street" stuff in just about any neighborhood surrounding the Financial District. You'll be within walking distance of South of Marker, North Beach, Chinatown, the Tenderloin, the Embarcadero (the piers, including pier 39 [tourist-land]). You'll also be a quick streetcar ride from the Castro, and a streetcar plus a few connections from the Haight, Golden Gate Park, and the Beach. Berkeley is a BART ride across the bay.

I'll meet you for a beer, definitely!!

:)

If this turns into another RFF outing, I'll try and find time to join in, too.

As Ray (the man with the everchanging avatar) says, you can walk just about anywhere. SOMA (south of market) towards the train station has lots of industrial-esque buildings that can be kinda neat. I've always found Market itself to be a bit boring in terms of photographs. not sure why. The Embarcadero is nice, and you're heading around towards the piers, ferry building, etc. Chinatown and Northbeach are lively at night. Be sure to bring wide angles for those last two places, though - the sidwalks are smallish and crowded, so you end up close to things.

Thanks a lot, folks. That already gave me some good ideas where to go and what to photograph ;)
Now let's just hope everything turns out as planned and my schedule will allow me enough time to take pretty pictures.
I plan to mostly use C41 B&W film since I will be travelling through the best part of May without much time to develop film. So any advice on a good photo shop for getting films processed and burned on CD? And to maybe stock up on film?

Thanks again,

Markus

Can anyone comment about the palace of fine arts? It's one of my favorite places in SF but its off and on under restoration... I would also suggest you head out the end of Van Ness durring the day or night. At the bay end there is a pier that looks back on Fishermans Wharf and is puts rather close to Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate isn't far either. It's a very sweet spot, just don't tell to many people, I like it the way it is. Makes a nice quite walk with a loved on in the middle of the night too.
