I've been thinking evil thoughts (well, evil as far as my bank balance is concerned ... :D ) after seeing one up on the bay. I've read Mr. Gandy's pages, but was wondering if anyone here has hands on experiance?

I'm considering it for the metering and the brightlines. I realize the J12 won't fit, but how well do the other Russian contax mount lenses work?

Some of the subscribers to Stephen Gandy's RF mailing list have the R2S and LOVE it. Getting the R2C gives you access to cheap Russian lenses and the Zeiss and Nikkor lenses (and Tanar) made for the Contax mount. Nikkor lesnes with a 'C' on the barrel often go for less than their S-Mount counterparts.

If you have good Russian lenses now, it gives a more modern viewfinder and TTL metering.
 
Thank you for the info - that's what I was hoping to hear about. I've got a nice selection of Jupiters (8m, 11, 12 &, just today, a black 9) that would be pleasant to use on a modern body. I'd especially like to have the brightline viewfinder... :D

Once I get Harry Scherer paid for, I'll have to get serious about looking for one. Was there a Nikkor 35mm with a C? Or was that just done on the longer lengths due to the mount differences? Oh and as long as I'm asking all these questions, what are Tanar lenses?

Some people also claims that Russian lenses in Contax bayonet mount are less prone to focusing error problems (the eternal debate of rusky ltm glass on non-rusky ltm bodies)

Also, with wide angle lenses the dof should be enough to cover the slight differences in focusing helicals between the R2C and R2S, so you have even more options :)
 
The Nikkor Wides have enough DOF to cover the focus error. The lenses available in "C" (attainable ones, anyway) are the 8.5cm f2, 10.5cm f2.5, and 13.5cm F3.5. I have the 8.5cm f2 and 13.5cm F3.5 in 'C', fine performers.

The 5cm F2 has enough DOF as well, the 5cm f1.4 is "pushing it" at closest focus.
