In terms of raw sharpness, contrast, and liveliness of images, I think the best lens I have ever had of any brand, and there have been many, was the 35/1.7, but I couldn't get along with the crappy focus ring and dumped it. These days I just throw on one of these and be happy: http://www.lenstab.com/

i know the 50/3.5 gets a lot of praise in terms of optical performance.

Like the focusing ring of the LTM Nokton 50mm f/1.5 the focusing ring of the LTM Ultron 35mm f/1.7 was redesigned at some time in their production years, so there are two types of focusing rings on these lenses. The earlier type had "flat" ribbed slots in the focusing ring while the newer type had "curved" ribbed slots. These later curved ribbed slots - exactly like the ones in the early Leitz Summilux 50mm f/1.4 v2 - provided a much better grip on the focusing ring.
Also, the black paint finish of these lenses was far less slippery than the chrome finish.
I am very happy with my black paint LTM Ultron Aspherical 35mm f/1.7 with the focusing ring of the later type, shown here together with the excellent LTM Color Skopar 50mm f/2.5.

I've heard good things about the Ultron but have never had Leica M mount lenses to compare it to.

Voigtländer LTM lenses: 50mm f/2.5 Color Skopar and 35mm f/1.7 Ultron Asph.
Thanks for the info. It took me years to find a 35mm Ultron and it turned out to be the second model with the bevelled ring. Always wondered why people complained about the focus ring. Trouble is the lens is too large for my IIIf, so now I bought a Skopar 35. Now I want to compare image quality.

My LTM Ultron 35mm fits perfectly on my IIIc - should fit your IIIf too!
Good to make a comparison of the Ultron 35mm LTM with the Color Skopar 35mm. I want one of these for my Nikon RF!
