Opinion: A trading board is not an auction site. If you wish to sell on a buy/sell/trade board, post a price or an expected trade item or value. Want the market's best offer? Use eBay. That's what it's there for.
This is standard policy on 95% of the other gear/collectibles trading sites I've run across or frequented. I happen to agree with it.
Of course, your mileage may vary. Discuss.

Yes, the thread has come up again because no policy has been set. I agree that a trading board is not an auction site. It is the seller's responsibility to set a price they can live with.

and if the last 3 threads like this one has not brought forth a policy then the thinking is another thread will?
if it is THAT important to you/anyone then i suggest you email stephen and ask directly.
just be prepared for the outcome because no matter what he says there will be a small revolt.

Honestly, I had no idea. I tend to avoid the board's off-topic sections because of the opportunity for contentious disagreement. I'm not a sh*t-slinger.
Just saw a sales post that ticked me off, that's all. Straw that broke this camel's back. But if it has been brought up before, a few times before... Well, duh?
Whatever. I'm not even going to bother returning to this thread. Anyone with the proper passwords may feel free to delete it. Have a nice day.

If they want best offer, give them yours if you want to. And leave it at that...if the seller really wants to take best offer, they will!! and if they don't...OH WELL!!
You can delete this post because you created it! Delete it if you want...no-one else will!!!

Worst case, low ball them and see what happens. Other than getting some electrons upset, what is the worst that could happen?
I agree with the fact that the classfieds are not set up for this sort of thing. But I look at best offers as a sign that they really do not want to sell it. Or they are afraid that they will not get what they want for it.
In the scheme of things not a big deal either way it comes down.

And what if you are selling something that you can't figure out what is the real value? If you put too low price there would be complaints that "he didn't sell it even if I was ready to pay the asking price" and if you put too high price no one will answer your add and no one will offer anything. So my vote goes for the "best offer".

since i found many RFF members seem not to be able to understand the concepts of bargaining or negotiations, i won't offer of attempt to buy anything via RFF any more.
as a consequence of my observations, i am not surprized to see that the "best offer" option simply does not work.
just my opinion - no need to flame.

i can't speak for all members here but my north american experience has shown me the while bargaining was a way of life back in nyc - here in edmonton it is mostly a no no. i remember my first purchase many many years ago, it was a winter coat and i asked the sales girl what her best price was. she looked at me like i had 2 heads.
it's only a little better now, with folks from other countries moving here and opening smaller shops, they will bargain some but seem content in adopting the canadian way.
now, i have a zuiko lens for sale and am open to some negotiations...
