I currently have a 4990, wanted to improve 35mm scans.

Should I buy 4 35 mm ANR Inserts @ $29.99 each or just drop $250 for a plustek scanner?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

the insert only helps with curled films. (i.e. most B/W)
it doesn't actually get much sharper but it avoids newton rings.
as a trade off I find fighting the dust is harder with ANR insert.
if money is burning a hole in your pocket buy a plustek. if not and you have no problems with newton rings don't spend money at all

Buy the Plustek. There are other options than the $30 BS pieces of glass for the 4990. I use it it with my V500 as well as the 7400 for curly negs.

Plustek 7400 will give you much sharper 35mm negs. I haven't yet scanned color negs with my 7400 but my b&w scan results are gradually becoming better. They are at their best almost as good as with my previous Coolscan 5000 ED.

I use the ANR glass for my V700 and looking at 200% crops when I got the inserts, the scans had more definition with than without the inserts. I also use a Plustek 7400 and the scans are just on a different world than the V700. If you make large prints than the Plustek is worth the modest price, but if you scan for the internet and small prints you would be fine with a flatbed and some inserts.

Ditto, and down to the last detail with my own experience. A significant upgrade with the ANR glass on my V700, but I got a 7400 and the difference is another level up entirely.
