Hello

I am considering entering the rangefinder world with a Bessa R4.

I would like to know whether the Zeiss ZM Biogon 28/2.8 intrudes signicantly into the viewfinder. From what I read here and there it is not conclusive. I guess it's pretty sure that there is intrusion into the finder itself, but:
- does it eat part of the 28 mm frame lines ?
- is the intrusion significantly smaller without the hood ? and is this lens OK without the hood ?

Thank you very much.

I can offer this; on a 21F2.8 Zeiss, fitted to the Contax G2, there is very slight intrusion, that really you don't even notice. On the leica M6 with a 28mm F2.8 the same applies; try it if you can in a shop; really it doesn't affect anything- the results are what counts.

The lens is pretty resistant to flare, still though I would want a hood. For many the 28mm lines are the ideal on the R4a, and the 28mm Biogon is a short and stubby little lens. Intrusion should be minimal, you may see a hood though. However I think that would be a particularly wonderful combination. If I didn't have the Contax I'd think about getting some Zeiss lenses for my Bessa.

That 35mm 2.8 is divine.

Thanks for the answers.

I'm not sure if i understood you. Are you referring to a G lens with a modified mount to fit the R4 ?

In any case both Zeiss G 21/2.8 and Leica 28/2.8 are significantly smaller than the Zeiss ZM 28/2.8: former two are 36 and 30 mm long, while the ZM is 51 mm long.

Intrusion confusion

Intrusion confusion

I have a 28 Zeiss, but it is for Leitz products.

I bought it because it's short, (not intrusive) and short enough to fit in a standard Leica case. ALL lenses wider than 35mm are more flare prone when compared with longer focal lengths. ALL lenses wider than 35mm have abbreviated hoods so that they are not intrusive. This makes them almost useless and something of a fail safe. I have a Zeiss hood for my 28 and if I had to do it over, I would pass.

I am very old, and while the Zeiss is VERY good, I still shoot the old time way and follow old time rules, #1 being keep the sun behind you and over your shoulder.

There is some intrusion into the 28 finder of the R4 with the Biogon 28f2.8 (as with the 28f2.8 Elmarit). Not enough to worry about - slight corner view (maybe 5-10%). The Biogon 28f2.8 does need a hood (my estimate of intrusion is based on lens with the Zeiss hood) - it does have a bit of a flare tendency, particular with the sun or strong light in the edge of the lens. Not enougfh to discount the lens, it is very sharp with a nice Zeiss M lens contrast.
