this past weekend, i traded my much loved 5d + L series 17-40 for a brand new fuji x100 with a fellow i met on ebay. as the title says i am absolutely blown away! in all honesty, the IQ rivals the 5d and zeiss planar T* combos i had, and at iso 16-3200 the fuji eats the 5d's lunch.

you may say, 'tony, are you crazy? how can you compare one of the best FF dslr's, with interchangeable lenses, to a tiny fixed lens essentially AF camera?' well first, yes i am crazy, but nonetheless i do. the IQ of this little monster to my eye in terms of resolution, color and sharpness is equal to the best of my much loved 5d. it's so good that you can easily crop the 35mm image up to an 80mm field of view and still compete favorably with the 5d and planar 85/1.4. properly utilize the sweep panorama function, which sets FOV at 180 or 120, and couple it with cropping, and you can go from 35mm to about 16mm FOV. so honestly, i feel like i have a camera capable of any focal length from 16-80mm.

out of about 150 pictures i took this weekend, i lost maybe 6 to poor focus, and 5 of those were under nearly zero light where even at iso 3200 the shutter speeds were coming in from 1/4-1/15 second. the AF horror stories just dont apply anymore with the firmware update and proper focusing technique and camera settings. put it on auto DR and the cam is capable of resolving very complex lighting situations and both protect highlights beautifully and open up dark shadows. to do this is actually adjusts iso, so some daylight shots in bright sun are recorded at iso 800, and the results are just great.

and the ovf, WOW WOW WOW! what an amazing tool. ive never used an M8 or M9, but if they have an as good viewfinder i'll eat my hat.

anyway, ive only had the camera only a few days, i dont know half of what it can do, and i'm am totally in love with it. my single complaint is that i would like it to be a little heavier, maybe with a metal frame like my ep2 as opposed to the magnesium alloy it uses. what a nit pick that is! and of course, using the focusing ring alone for focusing is impossible (what i do is set it to MF, press the AFL button to acquire AF, and if there's any problem i can then zoom in on the subject and use focusing ring for fine focus adjustments) but for IQ, auto focusing, low light/high iso etc, i dont think fuji could improve anything.

anyway, here are a few of my first photos, as well as my first photo posts on this forum. i found i was limited to 3 uploads, though i have seen posts with more, not sure why. anyway, no PP out of cam jpegs, first 2 at iso 3200, 3rd at iso 200:

ps i must have done something incorrect as i seem to have attached thumbnails and not actual pictures. sorry for my ineptitude; advice on what i did wrong is welcome!

Eff me all digital cameras really do produce identical looking pictures. I can never tell one from the other. The pictures you have posted on web-sized could be from a random 6mp point-n-shoot camera for all I could tell.

I had a similar reaction! Which is why I tell Full Frame nuts and Leica nuts that they are indeed, NUTS! The X100 creats some of the best files I've seen out of any camera. Its' not perfect, but it's close to it. And the "interface problems" are way overblown. Especially with the newest firmware, it focuses much better now.

Keep shooting with that X100, and we'll look forward to the LX in the spring.
