For anyone interested this is what Bob Shell had to say about his circumstances back in April:

I appreciate the interest in my situation. For obvious reasons I can not make public comments on the details of my case.

I will only say that I have done nothing wrong, have committed no crimes, have broken no laws. Everything that has appeared in the press is speculation since I have not given any of them interviews or commented on the record.

What should have been a personal tragedy for me and Marion's family and friends has been turned into something else solely for political reasons.

I would prefer that my case not be discussed on photography forums, since none of you know the facts. Once this is over I will tell my story.

Well in a free country like the USA, Bob doesn't have the choice whether people talk about his situation. His situation was certainly all over the news in Virginia because he was newsworthy, having been accused, and now convicted, of a crime. His arrest, the charges against him, his trial and conviction are all public record.

From a friendly point of view, this doesn't sound good. If people don't know the facts, on which basis are they supposed to help, or believe in the political reasons behind the trial ?

Surely local laws may restrict Bob's own freedom of speech about the case, but this doesn't mean there aren't a hundred of other ways to "let the truth out".

"Once this is over I will tell my story". Fine, when it will be ? after he gets his 30 years behind bars ?

Bob sounds here in a self defeated mood. This is bad news, yet understable.

What I find disturbing about Bob Shell is if you click one of the links on his website it takes you to a nude advertising site that has photos of children..

I find that really hard to swallow.......... and apparentlly so did a jury.
 
If this guy was not a photographer, it would never be mentioned here. The reality is that photography can afford the manipulation of others if the photographer pursues that agenda.
 
What you all not take into consideration is this:
Bob Shell was a famous model Photograher....
Bottom line, some teenager model went into his circle because she thought better....Most models thought Bpb was the trick!!!
Guess what?? Bob took her in as a companion,had sex with her!! He even took her in!!!

Is it Kosher?? some run-away Teen-ager comes to you as a hopefull prospect---she dies!!
who is responsible??!!
The 19 year old model looking for a future, Already distorted by drugs,a Teen-ager after-all---or the 57 year old Photographer letting it happen???

I'm sorry but hasn't that message from Bob been on his site for a veeeery long time already?

Bob was convicted and sentenced. Bob now has many opportunities open to him to fight this sentence. And if the facts have been distorted, truth bent and opinions posed as facts, he stands a good chance to have the sentence overturned. However, if facts remain facts, truth remains truth then he's in for 32 years.

BTW, IMO his sentence was deliberately bloated with secondary (and IMO futile) charges of drug possession, just to make sure he'd get a long sentence.

And that's why he didn't get put up for murder. Criminal negligence I could swallow, even in spite of the sheer nastiness of the circumstances, but to convict of murder would need much more evidence and motive.
