I have the classic. I just broke the wheel. First it jammed at bulb then I moved it eventually and now all the detents or grooves for the stops are gone. Basically the wheel turns freely without locking at each speed. Does anyone know the mechanical extent to such damage? The shutter speeds still seem to work and influence the meter.

Maybe only the knob connection to the shaft is gone.
I would suggest to free the knob and see what's under.
If the shaft is turning and clicking, all you have to do is reassembling the knob or if it's gone, buy a new one and install it.
If the shaft is moving freely, well then, I think it's something for a repairman.

Well its my fault. I just recently started using one finger instead of two for changing speeds.

I agree ... no need to feel responsible here because you change shutter speeds with one finger. I do the same on any camera ... sometimes things just break, a random event and it's no reflection on the camera's reliabilty overall!

I had a similar problem with one of my M4-P. It turned out that the small screw holding the shutter wheel had come loose and was easy to fix. However some lubricants had gummed up and the camera needed a CLA...
