I just got my Fed 2 and before I got to shoot a roll through it one of the shutter ribbons broke. :bang: At least it did it before I loaded a roll of film.

I'm attempting to replace the ribbons myself and the black ribbon I can find locally is a bit too thick. My wife had some in her ribbon stash (she's a scrapbooker, so it's extensive) that seems thin enough but it's light pink. Will it be OK to not use black ribbon? I would think so, but I wouldn't want it to effect anything.

And if all else fails, can you send off a camera to be CLA'd while it's taken apart?

Whoa! I didn't know you you could buy those whole like that! That's what I'll do. Might as well replace the curtains while I have it apart.

Well, I've got my replacement shutters but now I'm trying to find Pliobond locally. I'm going to call around to the smaller hardware stores since the big names don't appear to carry it. Which Pliobond am I looking for? Is it the stuff in the tube (P141) or the stuff in the can?

I was getting ready to replace my shutters but the replacements I got are about 2mm wider than the originals. Are the shutters on Zorkis, Zenits, and Feds supposed to be interchangeable?

Not sure if you have them out there, but Ace Hardware in Seattle carried Pliobond. Only hardware store I found here which had it. They also had Ronsonal and various other solvents.

You can also order it online.

No. The blind widths changed over the years. And sometimes between models. The later metal-crimped laths are quite wider than what a FED-1 (and some FED-2), most Zorki-1 would need for their shutters. The metal crimped laths also don't work very well in the early cameras- they can make the shutter winding heavier, or often, operate with more noise.

Thanks, Zorkikat, that's what I was afraid of. I emailed Oleg to see if I could send him this camera in its current state and have him replace the shutters and do a CLA while he's at it.

Alowisney, you can actually trim the blinds, but this can be tricky to do. If you have the original, lay it on the replacement and trace the formers outline on the latter with a pencil. You'd have to trim off the top and bottom sides.

The main drum and the opening curtain roller will not work if the curtains are wider than them.

Oleg responded that it's not a problem to send him the camera for a CLA while it's disassembled so I'm going to do that and have him replace the shutters at the same time. If I tried to modify these new ones I'd always be worried they'd fail, so I'm going to leave it to the professional!
