Buying a new lens

Hi all,

I am in the process of deciding a new lens for my canon p and wondered whether anyone here could help me along my way.

At the moment i only have the jupiter 8 - albeit a very sharp, good condition one.

I'm looking for a wider lens
In a few months i am buying an Epson r d1s so it dosen't matter if the lens is M mount.

I've been looking at the Minolta 40mm f2 Rokkor C as I have always loved minolta lenses but am unsure if the lens is different enough to my Jupiter.

My price range is about $500

Any ideas?

The Rokkor won't mount on your P, as it is only available in M mount (adapting from LTM to M is possible, but not the reverse, unfortunately), so you'd only be able to use it on your to-be-purchased R-D1 once you buy it.

Any of the CV 35s are good, although 35 and 50 aren't really too different in terms of FoV. The CV 21 is a wonderful lens, if that's not too wide. I love mine.

Depending on the kind of shooting you're looking to do, a 28 might be a good fit (bit more different than the 35 vs your 50). I think you could also use the whole finder on the P for roughly the 28 field of view, but maybe not as the 35mm lines on my P are pushed alllllll the way up against the edges of the finder already.
 
You can't fit the Rokkor on the Canon since the Minolta lens is M mount.

If you already have a 50mm and want something wider, go with a 28mm or even a 21mm.
The 28mm and 21mm CV lenses are outstanding. The small Skopars. The 28mm Ultrons are decent as well but they are very large compared to your camera body.
The Canon 28mm f/2.8 is a great lens but climbing in price. The f/3.5 version is good too but older.

A 35mm is nice but for many it's just a shy wider than normal and is used often as a normal. Of course, you could always get a Jupiter-12 for less than the price of a Leica lens cap and they are excellent if you get a good sample.
If you want to go with a 35, Canon offered the f/1.8, f/2, f/2.8 and an even older one which is mostly a collector lens but the aperture escapes me now, maybe f/3.2. Anyway, any of the Canon 35mm lenses are good performers.

You could also do a 3.5cm f/2.5 Nikkor in LTM which is a fantastic lens. Then there's the Leica offerings, some for more money and some for not too much, like the 35mm f/3.5 Summaron.

Whatever you find in a wide, you're likely to get a good lens unless you happen to have one imported from eastern Europe, then sample variation comes into play.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the reply and letting me know about the minolta lens - shame it won't fit. Later in my life i will probably get one as my standard lens for the Epson.
I quite like the idea of matching a canon lens with my P but don't know whether 35mm is wide enough. If i get a 35mm it will definitely be a canon one - although there are so many it will take a while to work out which one!
A canon 28mm went for under $400 so that could be a possibility as well.
Gonna check out the voigtlander lenses now
 
It is an excellent lens, and a good choice for your Canon P, but that price is much too high. I have a near-mint Canon 35mm f2 lens I bought on ebay about a year ago for $300. That was rather a good price, I believe, but with ebay it pays to be patient.

It's up to you of course, but I wouldn't pay that much. I suggest you keep tabs on the RFF Classified ads. prices there are often negotiable.
