Is any of the rest of this suite worth a look?
I checked out the color efex module and pretty much felt like I opened a box of crayons.
SEP2 is a nice program but... $150 for some grain... IDK?
I'm looking for something right now. Was hoping to try VSCO but I would like something that plugs into aperture and VSCO does not :?

SEP used to be us$199, so it's still a good deal if you like what it does.

Really depends on how much time you want to spend creating on your workflow. I use silver and color efex presets as baselines then adjust individually. Can I get to that baseline with just Photoshop (or any other tool)? Of course... But to me, $150 was worth the time I save with the presets.

The current suite is a great value when compared to what Nik sold individual components for. I had an old version of the Nik software that no longer was usable due to some Apple OS updates. Nik basically told me to go away. I sent Google the serial number and the story and they sent me a free unlock code.
I actually only use Silver Efx Pro but the sharpening program looks intriguing.

I would recommend also trying out other products, that I found to be almost as good, and have "trial" downloads available.
These are from -
OnoneSoftware.com
Topazlabs.com
Both of these are Plugins. I like the Ononesoftware version.

I actually liked the first SEP better, now they have all sorts of filters and effects that I don't care for, I don't think I'll be buying that in the future. VSCO seems much more interesting at this point

Bingo.
I agree totally with KXL on this.
I use the first version of SEP and I personally dig what it can do. I too use it as baseline to tweek - I've got a bunch of my own "formulae" now that makes the entire conversion process a lot easier and simpler for digital.
I also think, based on the other items (plugins/programs) I've tried for B&W conversion over the years, this one to me comes the closest to film - it's not the same as film but it's really really close.
Cheers,

I have VSCO for Aperture and it's OK, but I like DxOFilmPack much better. The nice thing about VSCO is that you are not creating those huge TIFF files in a round -trip process. Bad thing about VSCO, at least for Aperture, is that it appears to be pretty much at a dead end. Multiple new version released LightRoom, but Aperture appears to have been abondoned.

Presets and some tweaking are quite good with the Nik Silver EFX Pro 2. Saves a lot of time and gives good results for me. Some samples:

Try a search for coupons. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. Here's one:

Hope I am posting in the right location. I would like to use Silver Efex Pro - Do I need Lightroom to do so or can it be used without LR? Am using Xt1 and Em5- any suggestions? I do lots of black and white images. I don't know much about how to start, I have been using iphoto (!)- looking for a simple and direct system for processing.
Many thanks,
Darya

It works as stand alone, you just drag your file onto the SFX icon.
