I have been using the Epson Photo 1400 for a couple of years. I have always been very happy with the colour prints, but the BW prints - ye gods! Always some kind of colour tint. I have tried all kinds of tweaks in the driver, different paper profiles (Epson and 3rd party) - all to no avail. Until I came up with this:
Set paper to "plain"
Mark "greyscale"
Set printing quality to "Fine"
This way the blasted thing seems to turn off the colour cartridges. It works great on glossy and satin paper. Haven´t tried it on matte just yet, but have worked with both original Epson paper and some really cheap paper from the local supermarket. Great!
A little tweaking on Brightness and Contrast can be necessary for the different paper types.
