My late father was a highly organized person. His portable office was a worldwide known notebook, called Seven Stars. It came in several sizes according to the taste of the user, and yearly sets of pages to fill each year, after you bought the cover, that came either in leather or plastic. The hard cover lasted for some 5 to 10 years, if you bought the leather version.
The set of yearly pages was amazingly good designed, and i cannot start here to detail. So since i was a kid, by the 60's of the past century, I saw my father carrying already two or three of these, as his bussiness required it.
30 years ago I started too, but at some point I made a basic change. I asked my father that in one of his trips through Europe, he buy for me the small device to make the according holes to my prefered size of the Seven Star, so that I can insert different cuts of papers and other things.
Latter I started to replace most of the filler set, with my own pages, designed by me at the computer, and using faximilia paper for printing them, due to its low weight and thin width.
Some 5 years ago, it happened I stopped to use the Seven Star notebook, and started to write small notes, filling my pockets, wallet, and all sort of places to get lost.
Last month I started to feel I have to reorganize my life again and asked my friend Mike from RFF, a high tech lover, about used palm pilots. But the idea didn't cutter to me. It is a rather delicate instrument = not much suitable for my daily life, and each time I saw Mike writing something there with that little pencil, letter by letter, I was not sure if he is enjoying high tech, or doing something of practical use.
There is no comparizon between both in terms of storage capacity, straightforward acces, graphical beauty, and as said, speed of writting. The palm wins in that my preferred size of the Seven Star is like two palms one over the other, and a bit more thicker. But drop both to the floor and then...
Besides, the Seven Star is ourageously more cheaper, although it continues to be the king of personal notebooks and a luxurious one by itself.
This week I went to the old shop where I used to buy the fill set to see if the Seven Stars company still exists. Due to the appeareane of the palm pilots and so, i had strong doubts about, and was quite shy to ask the old sellers. So i cautiously entered the shop and asked the sellers if they still remember me, and thus started a conversation until I gathered the boldness to ask if the notebook is still alive.
"The Seven Stars notebook ?" they replied, "yes, it is a disaster. No single one left from last year. You will be lucky if you get one before the end of the year, since the demmand continues to be as great as ever. We even have people who left their phones for the day distribution in Israel starts for 2008" . Fortunately the sellers could sell me some Israeli designed second class copy fillers, with which I will manage to end the year.
Cheers,
Ruben
All the story is real, and any relation with ficticious speculations goes on the account of the beholder, although not exposed to criminal law.
