I have often been asked by other Photographers, as to where to find this or that in Tokyo, or how to find this shop or that shop with Second hand Equipment etc.
So I figured I'd start this thread and gradually add Shops. I will try to include as much information as possible, and try where possible to include a short discription opening times, Contact details and a map (Some Photos where concented)
The posted shops will be in no particular order.
I know that we have a few members in other citys so perhaps another thread with those?

Great idea Mike. Maybe you could also include mail ordering information (as in which stores provide such services). My own personal experience with mail ordering from Japan has not been great, the language barrier was the root cause.

OK, Well I'm going to start another Thread for the List. IF we could use this Thread for comments and keep the other thread comment free it would be nice
Mike.
The Thread is HERE
Terence, Yup I think that mail order could be quite difficult, but a few do have
english speaking staff (Sort of).

One other thing Mike, do you know of a place in Tokyo where I can get a CLA done cheaply?

Alan,
I havent had a CLA done on a camera exept by sending it back to the manufacturers, ie Nikon, Canon, Konica etc. I have heard good reports about Lemon re Leica, but not cheap!
I have had a few Lenses CLAd at a camera shop near map cameras Called "The Shinjuku Second hand Camera Market". They did a pritty good job on a Canon RF 50mm f1.2, cost me 6,000 yen for a full CLA (Including getting rid of some mold/fungus. took about 7-9 days.
I'll post the shop next,
Mike.
Let me try and dig up some more info I have had two or three other recommendations in the past for CLAs.

6,000 yen for a lens CLA is a pretty good price. By the way, is "o-va-ho-ru" the word for CLA?

Ha Ha LOL, Yes I guess that thats a good a word as any.
The Japanes would understand that.
The "propper" saying is "Tenn-kenn, Sou-Bi"
Tenn-ken meaning to test or inspect, like a car has to have a tenn-ken.
and Sou-bi meaning to make good or make useable.
but to be honest I don't think that there is a "Propper" saying.
You'd deffinately get blank stares with "Ce-Lu-Ae Onegai-shimasu"

Thanks for the detailed writeups so far on the thread Mike. You're starting to inspire to do something similar for Singapore. We do have a couple of decent stores here dealing in new and used gear.

Terence, Thats great to hear. I hope that it will inspire others in other countrys as well.
It would be great to be able to quickly look up for shop info in this forum before or even during a trip abroad and have this kind of info at hand!

What an absolutely great idea! There is only one camera shop here in the area, (Reno, Nevada) with anything worth looking at (new and used). To find anything else requires a 4 hour trip to Sacramento, California. I would however be happy to take a look in the shop in Reno for anyones needed items. Regards, Dave

Hi Mike
What are used Leica prices like there? I'm looking for an M6 classic (i think) I wish I'd had this resource when I was there last summer, though my girlfriend is happy i didn't...we already spent enough time in BIC camera and wandering arround Ginza looking for used shops (i'd heard there were some there, but didn't have any other info other than this...at least it was sunny!)

Hey Chris,
Probably not a good idea looking for Leicas in Japan, That is unless youre looking for the extra rare or the top end..The Pricing in Japan for cameras not made here are still generally high, Strangly the very top end gear can be a little more reasonable, but then I'm talking about limited editions that are US$ 5k and above.... A quick search for a M6 Classic via the net got 3 finds at roughly $1150, $1300 and $1590 To me these prices are high, Although two have all the docs and boxs etc. Thats the one thing overhere, usually any second hand gear is in very good condition and complete with all the bits that come when bought new!
Best

Thanks Mike!
I'm having trouble finding M6's for less than 1300 here right now, and while I can't buy right now (until my SLR gear sells) it is getting disheartening.
Cheers,
Chris

if there are more members living in japan here maybe we can expand the shop list to include shops outside tokyo. i have a friend in kanazawa who's been buying a lot of very cheap old cameras from a used camera shop there and sends them back to his home country for high school kids to use in learning photography.
me, i just get stuff from Yahoo Auctions Japan (Japan's equivalent of eBay), mainly Japanese camera stuff 'cause foreign-made cameras tend to be expensive. used camera shops here in our place are more expensive than the online auctions.
oh, i live one-and-a-half hours north of tokyo...by shinkansen.

word? up!
99 % of the sellers on yahoo auctions japan don't sell overseas, so it's mostly a no-go for peeps outside japan. does anybody know how reluctant the listed shops' owners are to do mailorder if language as such is not too big a problem?
