Can I still be here when I have no working RFs...?

I don't really mean that question seriously. At least, I hope no one takes it seriously - I'd like to think I'm still welcome here 🙂

But my canonet meter just died, which leaves me with:

-Canonet - no meter
-Electro GSN - don't like it's aperture priority settings and size
-Konica S2 - all kinds of broken that needs repair
-Retina IIa - cocking rack issue, no meter to begin with
-Fed IIIa - no meter, only got 1 lens

Now, I know a lot of you get by without meters, including those of you with M2's and M3's, etc. But I don't have a handheld meter right now, either (broke that, too), and sunny 16 gets hard when you get into dark situations.

Sigh. things just keep breaking on me. My DSLR is getting a lot more use now.

no. go away.

😉

Indoors I usually find f2 at 1/60th to be sufficient in most "normal" household/office light. (at asa 250/320)

I try to use my meter as little as possible. 🙂

Have you found the "Ultimate Exposure Computer" pretty usefull if you can commit a few basics to memory.

Rogue,
I have a little cheat sheet from the UEC - an edited version for my needs. And I'm slowly learning it as an extension of the sunny 16 rule. But it's slow going, and it's tough. And, most importantly, I had hoped to use my canonet as an all b/w backup/touch of something for weddings, but without a working meter it's harder.

thanks for the tip.

Kaiyen - I have a good working canonet Ql17 GIII with new seals/etc. that I'm considering putting up for sale... if you want dibs let me know if you are interested.

I had a Canonet QL17 GII meter that died a quick death. It should not have, died after I CLEANED the electrical contacts.

1) Took off the bottom, two screws Note how the battery door fits in. It will pop out mometarily al by itself.
2) took off the tripod mount, three screws.
3) Took out the battery compartment, two screws, one also holds in the battery getter-outer.

The electrical contact is held to the battery compartment with two flimsy plastic nubs. Mine broke, the conact moved back slightly, and shorted out on the camera body. I put a strip of electrical tape behind it. Put all back together, works great.

Worth a look.

Canonets do seem to have issues with meters. FYI: I've recently priced out a repair on them...comes to around $125. Top price for one in excellent working condition is around $200 but you can always gamble on a cheaper model.

Essex Camera in New Jersey is closer to $75 for a repair of the Canonet.

I've had them repair a Canon 7, Canon VI-T, and Canon V-t. They did good jobs on those.

Allen

It is not unknown I lose or break several things each weekend.
Record is 2x Kievs, penutimate weekend, dropped an invercone, was really good and picked up all the shards. Then discovered the meter needle was stuck. Spent an hour with superglue(Cyanoacrylitic) putting humpty dumpty back to gether again. But now I have three glued invercones, three dead meters, one undamaged invercone, one working meter. It is cheaper/easier buying another working one than fixing broken ones.

Brian - I'll try your fix.

I was more griping than anything else. I don't have the money for a camera at this point (not even an inexpensive canonet, despite all the nice offers and pointers). I just spent way too much getting my car fixed lately

thanks,
allan

Hey Allan,

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Since you can't afford to buy one from somebody, let me know if you want to borrow a working camera for a while. I can hook you up with either a Canonet GIII QL17 or a Konica Auto S2. Both are in excellent condition, including their meters.

I'm wondering the same thing. All I have left is an inop Canonet.

At one point I had two M6TTL's and an M2, 35 Asph. lux, 50 lux, 24 Elmarit, 90 Cron, 90 Hexanon, 40 Rokkor, 50 Summicron, 50 Hexanon, 50/1.5 Canon, 21 VC and a 40 Nokton, but they're all gone.

Ooh, wait! I see three Jupiters on the shelf. No body to mount them on, but still! 😀

Randy - thanks. I wouldn't touch that black canonet of yours, ever, though. 🙂

The only DSLR images I would ever post would be in something like the 1 light portrait thread, where I've done them with that type of camera so far. Otherwise I wouldn't do that. That would be just rude...

I use my DSLR as a light meter for my med format & large format cameras at times.

Otherwise, to go with the Sunny 16 rule, I also find that typical indoor lighting is a 1/30 f2.8 iso400.

Allen, Were going to have to lock you into our Dungeon! Its very dark in there with chemical oders and a red light! Why dont you just buy another working rangefinder? If I lived in the U.S.A. I would be camera poor with all the camera shows and flea markets and the classified adds here. Im trying to work a deal now to buy stuff throughout the year and get it hand carried to Southeast Asia. Im to lazy to fly to America not to mention I hate staying in western style hotels.
