Can I use a circular polariser on my manual focus lenses

The info I've found in various web searches says that circular polarising filters are supposed to be used on AF lenses and linear polarisers are intended for MF lenses.

There don't seem to be many (well-known brand name) linear polarisers available on the auction place or other online sources. Can I use a circular PL filter on my MF lenses without any adverse effects?
