Dear Peter,

Saw a thread on a Canon 28/3.5 for sale online just now, which said that some claim that to be sharper than Garry Winogrands famed 28/2.8, and others state they have a black-barrel Canon 3.5/28mm. I used to have a chrome one...

What types of 28mm lenses did Canon make, and what can be said about sharpness? Any top dog amongst them? Or any brilliant performer?

Educate me, please?

I can get the ball rolling.

There was only ever a chrome Canon 28f2.8.

There was an earlier chrome 28f3.5 and a later black 28f3.5.

FWIW, I had several 28/2.8 copies. My - new to me - chrome 28/3.5 clearly performs better at the same apertures. In fact, in some ways (center resolution) it's better than the avenon 28/3.5 and the various color skopars that I tried, as well as my Elmarit v3. But center resolution is of course not everything.

I was tempted by the canon 28mm, but at the end, the long throw and the min focus distance of 1m made me decide against it.
I have a skopar, and it may not be the sharpest 28 around, but it's very good and its ergonomics are fantastic.

I've been somewhat underwhelmed by my chrome 28/3.5 but not by lack of sharpness. I just wish it had a tad more contrast. Otherwise, I do enjoy using it. The finder that came with it is nice too. I think its my only 28 in LTM or M, so I must at least be satisfied with it.

Hi

As "Franks "mentioned there was only one 28mm f/2.8 lens Canon manufactured and it was always chrome. I have recorded three versions but the schematics are all the same.
I had never heard of Garry Winogrands until last weekend when I visited a MoMA photographic exhibition from New York at the Perth Art Gallery and a couple of his photos were on display.
Cheers Peter

Still there's a 2.8/28mm in the classifieds and my buy-finger 😀 is itching, tell me why I shouldn't get it!?

Quite the opposite: I happened to get one for a reasonable price and I love it.

My Canon 28/2.8 RF is black and chrome....I can confirm it is quite poor wide open very high CA, although I like the look.
Just checked quickly and could not find any picture like mine. Are you sure it exists only chrome. My one is like the 35/1.8.....

You have a black & chrome 28/2.8? Yes please, post a pic of this lens.

Jim B.

Hi. It is all chrome. many apologies for raising expectations. No need for posting. I had this impression as it has a bronze filter thread (that I believe quite common with this lens) that made me remember it as not being a summaron/hektor type of chrome lens, but having the whole top ring black. my one is 12613
